    Hi everyone,

    I’m looking for a way to have a home page that asks a question
    ‘what are you here for?’

    and people can click either ‘x’ or ‘y’ and be taken to the appropriate page which will then have a menu etc.

    I don’t want a menu on the home page.

    Is there a way to do this?

    Thanks 🙂
    Emma

    Sure,

    Create a page template based on page.php named front-page.php.

    In it, edit get_header() to get_header( 'front' )

    Create header-front.php from header.php.

    Edit header-front.php to remove the default menu and to add you questions and links.

    This work should all be done in a Child Theme where you can also style your new section(s).

    Thanks for your help but I’m still a bit confused – I’m not sure how to create a page template based on page.php

    I think once I’ve done that, I’ll understand how to edit the code etc.

    Thanks again:)

    What theme are you using? Do you have a Child Theme set up? That’s the first step…

    You could also possibly just use a landing page plugin…

    No, I don’t have a child theme set up as yet.

    I understand I have to do this through my root directory, which I can’t locate.

    I’m hosted through Go Daddy if that helps at all.

    Thanks!

    Thank you – I should be right now but I’ll leave it open just in case 🙂

    Thanks!

    I’ve got my FTP set up and have created a child theme folder using this link

    http://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes

    My next (maybe stupid) question is whether I need a program to write my style sheet or if I can do it on word? I have dropped a word file into my blackbird.child folder but it is not appearing on my wordpress dashboard like it’s supposed to.

    Thanks

    You need to use a plain text editor – Word is not compatible with websites. There are many free text editors – your computer likely has one already.

    (@wpyogi)

    Also, don’t use a “dot” in the folder name – it may not work – just use blackbirdchild.

    I’ve transferred the style sheet to my plain text editor and added it to my FTP under ‘style.css’ in my ‘blackbird-child’ folder but it still isn’t showing in my dashboard on wordpress – should it automatically be available there or am I missing a step?

    WPyogi

    (@wpyogi)

    So is the new folder in this location:

    wordpress
       wp-content
          themes
             blackbird
             blackbird-child
                style.css (your new one)

    If so, what’s in the new file – it should only be that short top section?

    emmachitty

    (@emmachitty)

    yep, it is and the following is in the file:

    /*
    Theme Name: Blackbird
    Theme URI:
    Description: Child theme for the Blackbird theme
    Author: Emma Chitty
    Author URI:
    Template: Blackbird
    Version:
    */

    @import url(“../blackbird/style.css”);

    WPyogi

    (@wpyogi)

    So close – just change this – no capital B:

    Template: blackbird

    emmachitty

    (@emmachitty)

    it now reads

    /*
    Theme Name: Blackbird
    Theme URI:
    Description: Child theme for the Blackbird theme
    Author: Emma Chitty
    Author URI:
    Template: blackbird
    Version:
    */

    @import url(“../blackbird/style.css”);

    and it’s still not working – should it literally just appear in ‘appearance > themes when I search for ‘blackbirdchild’?
    Do I have to have a plugin I’m forgetting about?
