Hi there,
My understanding is that some browsers won’t allow auto-playing videos like that, especially on mobile.
For instance, if you open Safari, it won’t load the video.
This is also not a good idea for performance, so I would generally recommend not doing that.
Dear Felipe… thanks for your suggestion. I think that video inside home is a good idea my website is http://www.grandprixaltotevere.it , do you see it ?
Hi @willy70 – I do see the video when visiting from a desktop and it looks very nice.
In terms of on mobile – I can echo @foosantos point that autoplay videos are disabled on many/most phones. From what I’m aware this means the decision was made (when Twenty Seventeen was developed) to only show the image on mobile devices. So there’s not really going to be a way around that in this case.
Dear all, Are you sure that my problem is autoplay and an other component (responsive) of 2017 theme ?
In case of autoplay , do I add html statement like this “?autoplay=1” inside youtube URL ?
Thanks
Willy
Hey @willy70!
Dear all, Are you sure that my problem is autoplay and an other component (responsive) of 2017 theme ?
The theme only shows the image on mobile because most mobile devices don’t auto-play videos like this. It’s also not recommended that change this in the theme’s code, since your visitors will have a worse experience on mobile this way.
Dear all, I chose this theme specifically because it offered the possibility to include a video in the header. There are several websites that have this feature. For example: https://www.corsadisanmartino.it/ So, I have two questions. The first is how can I modify the code to make the video work on mobile devices as well? The second question is, which theme, other than this one, can I use?
I add this question… If I put an image in the header from desktop, I see it well on desktop, but not on mobile. I only see the central part enlarged.
Any suggestion ?
Thanks a lot
Hi @willy70!
The video header uses core WordPress functionality of custom headers for loading the video. You would likely need to create a child theme, and modify some javascript code to make it work the way you want. If you’re not familiar with PHP and Javascript code, you might want ot hire a developer and point them to the additional link below:
https://core.trac.wordpress.org/browser/trunk/src/js/_enqueues/wp/custom-header.js#L74
An alternative would be to switch to a block theme, and use a plugin like this in conjunction with the theme.
If I put an image in the header from desktop, I see it well on desktop, but not on mobile. I only see the central part enlarged.
This is the expected behavior. The image is used as a decorative background, and is automatically adjusted to show like this on mobile. This is because it has to work on multiple screen sizes.
Dear @properlypurple,
I’ll try AWB plugin to make some tests.
thanks a lot for you help !
Bye
Willy
but …. Why this plugin work only with Block Thems ?
I prefer this themebut I if hunderstand AWB doesn’t work with twenty seventy
What do you thing about this theme https://themeisle.com/themes/hestia/ ?
Bye
Hey @willy70! The plugin I suggested only seem to work for block themes, so you would have to use one of those to make it work.
I’m not familiar with the theme you have mentioned, but you can reach out to the developers of the theme to get more information about it, and to check if it suits your use better,
@willy70, have you had any luck? I am working with the Hestia theme and want to do something similar. My goal is to load one video on desktop and a different more mobile friendly version for mobile. Hoping to start following this trail to see where it leads!
UPDATE – Actually playing around with things, I think I am going to transition to converting my video to a GIF instead of a video.

@willy70
UPDATE 2 – I used https://ezgif.com/optimize to convert my shortened video into a GIF, did a little compression (my video already had a black 50% transparent screen over it – so CTA is easier to see) and uploaded as the backup image. You have to play around with it a bit, make sure NOT to let wordpress crop the photo or it wont play on mobile.
Let me know if this helps?
Dear all, at this moment I have no updates and I stopped. But the idea of using an animated gif could be a solution.
Thanks
