Home page as static page but use slider?

    Seems I can only use the Frontpage slider if I opt to check “Your latest posts” as the home page. Is there a way to choose “A static page” and still use the slider option?
    Or, turn off the posts on the homepage.
    Also, when I tried to use the +4 widgets on the Frontpage options, they stacked vertically, I would like to have those line up horizontally, is there a setting that I am missing to do this?
