• Hi, I have been using WordPress for a number of years, most often for blogs and some simple sites….but have planned on really digging in to it the last few months…well, I have recently been hired to “recreate” some of the features on a real estate blog – to another blog – same company – I have access to both….the features allow the basic staff to add and edit featured homes of the month…they want that feature to be placed on the “new” blog by me.. and I didn’t develop the other… as I said I have access to both Dashboards so off I go… To be honest… I have been working with Joomla for about 6 years now and this would be more usual for me there… but I am REALLY excited to dive in… I am working on how to backup first… so, 1st question – what would people do first to begin learning the one setup and then bringing it to the new wordpress site? They want the new site to maintain its current design and layout – but with the home updating feature added… it looks like this was done primarily in posts not pages…. for starters…. 😉 Thanks!!

  • Take a look at some of the backup plugins available (EZPZ is one), many have migration features that could simplify your life. Also look in the plugins section of the old site to see what they might be using to create the home-of-the-month.

You can examine the code of any theme or plugin by using the built-in editor, Appearance > Editor and Plugins > Editor. If you know your way around php and javascript you can learn a lot, particularly in the functions.php file.

Thanks Gary… that’s what I’ve been doing pretty much so far… great new client – slight learning curve – which I informed them of… but – they will want results in about 7 – 10 days… 😉 I see no use of backups anywhere – which I never like to see… big company too… the site I’m moving the features too seems better in design… I may not be a WordPress developer “yet” but I know how valuable a recent and reliable back up is…

    thanks again !

It’s a little confusing at this point….. I don’t suppose you’d like to take a look and make some suggestions would you? I have done some copying and pasting of code but I’m not on target yet for sure…

    Have a good weekend…

That’s awesome….I’ll set up a username to access….to be honest, I’m kind of kicking myself for not spending as much time on WordPress as I have on Joomla. I really enjoy Joomla quite a bit and, I really love WordPress too..but I need to get really committed to WP as I have with Joomla… that’s when the fun starts… 🙂

I haven’t backed up this project yet, which I will soon…I’ll send the email to you shortly with the login info…thanks Gary…
