Hide wordpress (while developing) with htaccess htpasswd?

  • Hi,
I’m working on a site (multisite+buddypress) we need to “hide” while developing, but we also need to see/test the site as a “not-logged-in” user, so the regular “coming soon” plugins/solutions that require a user to be logged in won’t do the job. Or at least – none I know of?

I thought I could use htpasswd+htaccess, and added the neccesary code to .htaccess and a htpasswd-file. It seems the password-part works fine, but wordpress gives a server configuration error? I have tried adding this both below and above the #BEGIN WordPress and #END WordPress:

    AuthName "Secure Area"
    AuthType Basic
    AuthUserFile .htpasswd
    require valid-user
