Thanks Oliver for all of your expertise! I have another request, should you choose to accept.
I suspect you have some css or some way to keep the page featured images displaying as they do on the homepage, but maybe hide them on the interior pages. With your help, the homepage is looking good. However, these large featured images are larger than they need to be when viewing the interior pages. My plan is to add new images sized 2000×150 to the top of the interior pages instead of the featured images. This is a similar concept the the homepage header image displaying at aproximately 200px tall on the interior pages. This featured image modification is the same idea but with the featured images instead of the header image.
    Thanks Again!

    Hi again,

OK, with the Volunteer page you show as an example, do you mean you want the featured image to be stretched so it’s only 200 pixels tall (it’s currently 672px on my laptop) or do you want the image to be cropped to 200 pixels tall by taking a letterbox slice out of the middle of the featured image?

Or do you mean something else? Perhaps you could mock up a screen grab of the Volunteer page to show what you’d like it to look like?

    Thanks,

    Oliver

Hello Oliver, Actually, the easiest thing may be to make the featured image for the page display on only the homepage and not on the actual page. Then I could make individual images for the pages. That picture looks good on the homepage but just looks out of place on the actual page and pushes the page content below the fold. Here is a page I have made using a different theme. https://www.subtleimpressions.com/graphic-design/ Do you see the 2000x150px colored image. I would like to be able to put these on the interior pages of sites using Slider Revolution plugin in place of the featured image. I would make one slider per page. The slider would be edge to edge and the page content boxed.

The big blue image on the https://www.attachfamilies.org/volunteer/ page looks great on the homepage but that image looks out of place on the actual interior page. Would you agree?

I believe in one of the threads I had seen a solution to making the featured image not display on the interior pages but still display on the homepage. Now I cannot find that thread.

Is there a way to make the featured image not display on the interior pages but still display on the homepage as parallax?

Yes, we can prevent the featured image from being displayed in the header of interior pages by using “post_thumbnail_html” filter or “begin_fetch_post_thumbnail_html” / “end_fetch_post_thumbnail_html” hooks.

However, how to decide if the featured image should be displayed or not … ? Would this be on a “per-page” basis with a custom field (preferably this would be done with a tick box when editing a page)? Or are you suggesting turning off featured images on internal pages altogether?

    Please advise.

    Thanks,

    Oliver

Hello Oliver, If given a choice; would prefer the tick box when editing a page but the turning off featured images on internal pages altogether would be a good second choice.

That might be similar to the tic box to display or hide the page title on the page. That works well for the page titles. If there was a tic box to display or not display the featured image on the interior page that would be very helpful in many installations.

    Hi,

Can you please screen grab the option you’re talking about to “display or hide the page title on the page”?

We cannot locate this option in Twenty Seventeen theme or our plugin?

    Thanks,

    Oliver

Hello Oliver, Actually, it turns out the Page Title toggle is from a plugin called Title Remover by WPGurus. But, that works good, and if there could be a similar function to turn off the featured image on the interior pages, that would be useful in many cases.
Thanks again for all your work!

OK, I did think this was functionality from a 3rd party plugin.

I’ve had a look at the one you mention and can see quite few bad reviews saying that the plugin doesn’t work for them (so be careful with that particular plugin).

Having said that, it seems to be developed in exactly the way I would have imagined it to be using post meta data to save the desire to hide a particular page’s title.

We can develop something similar for this plugin which hides the featured image when viewing a page. We’ll add it to the “to do” list.

We’ve just pushed an update that does the following on the upgraded plugin …

Adds an option when editing a post or page (shown below the featured image) to hide the featured image on single post / page templates

… however, this is only for the Classic editor. We need to investigate how to accomplish this in Gutenberg!

Let me know what you think.

    Thanks,

Hello Oliver, It works perfectly! https://www.attachfamilies.org/support-us/ Here is a page without the featured image, but with the featured image displaying on the homepage.
At this point I don’t know if there is a big rush to make it work with Gutenberg. We might do a survey to see how many people are using it. Future versions of Gutenberg will surely become more functional.

    That’s good news.

Annoyingly Gutenberg works rather differently so where we have injected the checkbox into the existing Featured Image meta box relatively easily … I’m not sure it will be so easy to do the same with Gutenbery GUI.

We’ll get there even if we have to create a new metabox.

I’ll mark this as resolved in the meantime 🙂

I’ve just posted an update which makes this compatible with Gutenberg by using a new Metabox.

Let me know if there are any issues.
