Helsinki theme, cropping header image results in broken link

Title says it all. Whenever I try to crop the header image according to Helsinki theme’s recommended aspect ratio, it results in a broken image as if it was unable to make the cropped copy. I’ve tried editing folder permissions on the upload/[image folder] but I get the error “operation not permitted”. How do I fix this?
