Support » Fixing WordPress » Help with Posts & Blog

  • Hi,

I inherited a site and upon looking at “theme details”, it shows built with “Version: 1.0.0 By the WordPress team”, which I believe to be a basic WP theme. I am figuring out things about this site but having problems with posts/blogs.

I created a page /blog/ and set it to the posts page, but there is no formatting. However, if I go to a category page, like /blog/news/ everything looks perfect, and there are individual posts which you can click into.

What I need help with is getting the /blog/ to have the same formatting, show all categories, and have ability to click into individual posts. Not sure why the category page is fine but the main blog page is not.

Also sidebar is showing at bottom.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

**edit – go to /blog/news/ to see what I am talking about

Your theme has been customized from a default WP theme. There’s no telling how much of the original theme is left beyond the version by WordPress team. It was apparently not customized to format pages properly, the focus was on posts. The theme CSS needs to be updated to cover both.

You can use your browser’s CSS inspector to analyze the proper post’s CSS and compare with your deficient page. It’s likely a matter of adjusting CSS selectors to cover both types of content. Either by removing specific selectors or adding other selectors so that the application is wider.

Perhaps a better alternative would be to select an entirely different, modern, up to date theme. There are many hundreds of great themes in the WP repository for you to choose from.

ETA: Please do not use URL shorteners when posting links in the forum. People need to know where they are going before committing to the link. Not being able to do so can be risky for other users.

    Hi bcworkz,

Thanks for your detailed reply and suggestions. I’m working with a developer now to configure CSS on that page.

Unfortunately, a new site build is not in the client’s budget or scope, but I will suggest that to the client further on down the line.

For the link, I used a shortener to conceal the site URL from crawlers but I can use the full URL moving forward.

    Thanks again!
