[Resolved] Help with drop down menus

  • Hello, and thanks in advance!

    I am using the Tandil theme, and have created a website at http://www.forkidssakeelc.com Everything is working good, but I have one small issue.

    In firefox, the dropdowns work great, but in IE, the drop downs disappear before you can move down the menu. I have temporarily solved the issue by moving the text a little lower, as you can see, and that allows access to the drop down menu’s.

    What it appears to do is when you move the cursor down the menu, and it goes over top of the text of the site, the menu disappears.

    I hope that makes a little bit of sense, and I hope someone can help me with it.

    Again, thank you in advance,

    Sean

    Looks like a z-index problem. Find this in your tandil theme style.css:

    #tabs #page-list LI UL {
    POSITION: absolute; PADDING-BOTTOM: 2px;  MARGIN: 0px; PADDING-LEFT: 0px; WIDTH: 164px; PADDING-RIGHT: 0px; BORDER-TOP: medium none; PADDING-TOP: 0px; LEFT: -999em
    }

    and add a z-index:150; to it, like this:

    #tabs #page-list LI UL {
    POSITION: absolute; z-index:150; PADDING-BOTTOM: 2px;  MARGIN: 0px; PADDING-LEFT: 0px; WIDTH: 164px; PADDING-RIGHT: 0px; BORDER-TOP: medium none; PADDING-TOP: 0px; LEFT: -999em
    }

    Oh boy, I think this is gonna be one of those problems. The z-index does not seem to help the problem.

    I really do appreciate your help though.

    Do you have any other thoughts on this?

    Thanks again!

    Fix your missing closing tags in the menu: [Invalid] Markup Validation of http://www.forkidssakeelc.com/ – W3C Markup Validator which might be part of the problem. Or try a proven cross browser menu, like WordPress › WordPress CSS Drop-down Menu « WordPress Plugins.

    Man, I really appreciate everything you are helping me with, this stuff is pretty new to me.

    I feel kind of foolish, but of the recommendations that the validator recommends, I do not know which file they are looking at. I cannot figure out which page I need to make those changes on, do you know where the changes need to be made?

    Again, thank you so much!

    Were you editing the tandil theme? If so, go back to a fresh copy and make your edits one at a time and then you’ll need to learn some CSS: CSS Troubleshooting « WordPress Codex. If you’re trying to learn how to edit and develop themes, start with a theme that has simpler code, like the default WP theme. It’s a learning process….

    If you weren’t editing the theme, find a theme that is valid XHMTL and says it supports drop down css menus WordPress › Free WordPress Themes to begin with.

    Thanks for all of your help, it is appreciated. I was able to resolve the problem. It was related to the “border-top” of the tabs, I removed that border and the problem resolved.

    Thanks for you help and input.

    Glad you got it to work. I’d still fix your validation errors as they will affect display in different browsers, like IE….

    I am having this same problem on my site with IE. The drop down over the right sidebar goes away when you hover over it and try to move down. The drop downs over the main text area work fine.

    Here is the site. It’t the Contact Us drop down that goes away.

    I looked in the .php for this template and I don’t see what I can change. I also looked at the style.css, but it’s not clear to me what to change.

    Kinda new at this.
