Help with a Theme (11 posts)

Okay this is my first ever post to the WordPress board. I have been running my site http://www.definingdavid.com for about 6 months now. I have consistantly used all the common free themes. I am wanting to actually get something that I want and something that I like.

I want some color to it, but I don't want it to look cartoonish like so many bought templates look.

That's really the only restriction I have except I want it to be 3 columns, and made for widescreen. Most people that visit my site have settings better than 800x600 so there is no need to have all the blank space on the page.

Anyway, any recommendations of a person that could design this? I have no idea where to start.

I have looked at some sites and saw their creations but again all of their sites look like a comic book page.

I have even attempted to build one myself, but, and no need lying, I'm just too lazy and not smart enough.

Anyway, if you have any companies or people you can recommend, please do...

Have you tried looking here http://codex.wordpress.org/themes? You may find one you like.

That's quite a difficult one. A professional designer (with the needed coding know how) might be too expensive, but what worked for me, was to find a somehow fitting design and make the few needed changes by myself.

I could recommend you a great agency in germany, but as you are from Arkensaw (?) it might be difficult to get the business done ;-)

jwurster- I have infact been through all of those designs. I guess I"m just being too picky.

bob58 - It's Arkansas. I may end up just having to edit somebody elses design.

I guess I wanted a logo based website. I would love to have some sort of logo created out of the words Defining David or at least DD and I figured if somebody created the site, they would create that as well. I guess I could just find someone to create the logo and incorporate it into a site myself.

The beauty of WP is that your blog is yours. WP is so flexible, that you can easily make it you. I like 3-column themes and have tried several and tweaked them to be a little more like me. You are right in that you need to get someone to make a logo for you. I would pick one of the 3-column themes an start making it into yours.

BTW, good starting choice of theme.

Thanks jwurster. :) I appreciate your help. Any idea who makes really good logos?

I have looked at some sites and saw their creations but again all of their sites look like a comic book page.

When speaking of professional (meaning paid for) blog designs, you have to remember that everything in a designer's portfolio is something their client has asked for. If you looked at my portfolio, you'd see a lot of cartoony designs, but when a client asks for something, I usually give it to them (even when it pains me to do so). ;)

There are many talented WP people and I'm sure someone will chime in. I am not a graphics artist but I did try building a logo out of my blog site name. But it didn't work for me. So, I took an easier approach. I found a photograph I took and made it my header image. You might want to start there.

Good point techwench. I guess the design had to have been requested, but it still turns me off. How would one go about seeing your portfolio?

    Shalom all:

I'm looking for a little graphical help.
I'm a visually impaired user, so layouts definitely aren't my my strength, but there are some things I needed to add to the default theme (which is the theme I was using) that seem to have smashed everything in to one space.
I added a date display at the top, and some stuff to the sidebar and footer.
I'd like to be able to have the items on the site, but want it to look presentable so that sighted people don't have trouble with it.
If anyone would be willing to help, I'd appreciate it.
You can view the site at

    Thanks in advance.
