[resolved] help troubleshooting empty sitemap-news.xml (12 posts)

Trying to locate the cause and fix an empty sitemap-news.xml issue.

http://www.justpushstart.com/sitemap-news.xml is the URL and shows nothing in a browser. Not sure if Google News is seeing the sitemap correctly or not as we can't varify if it has content listed on our end.

Can someone help us with troubleshooting this problem?

we use mostly standard plugins, including wp-super-cache (which we've removed any cached sitemap files)

    Thanks so much.

Thinks we got it working by disabling any other sitemap generating plugins, deleting cached files and re-enabling the plugin again. (also saved permalink settings just to be sure) and both main and news sitemaps show up.

Will leave this open until can confirm with Google news and the site manager.

OK The xml is being generating but its not validating with Google or the W3C markup validater.. Its failing on

Line 35780, Column 28: end tag for "url" omitted, but OMITTAG NO was specified

    <!-- Compression = gzip -->

You may have neglected to close an element, or perhaps you meant to "self-close" an element, that is, ending it with "/>" instead of ">".

    a little help here please.

Only the sitemaps for years 2010 and 2013? How many posts do you have in that year? It looks like the sitemap generation breaks off after a while... Do you get any 'mermory exceeded' errors on your log files?

In any case, it might help to try the post sitemaps 'per month' option to see if you do not run into any mermory limits then...

It seems its generating some bad XML, maybe due to number of entries, or ??
There are a lot of posts (1000's) so maybe.

not sure of mem limit errors as we don't have access to the server logs.. will try to find out.

Ok then, so where is the per month option setting? I don't see them anywhere.

whoops, I found the settings.. its been on per month so that's not solving it.

    any other ideas??

Looks like the per month setting is working. See the all new entries on http://www.justpushstart.com/sitemap.xml and notice that the sitemap-posttype-post.2010.xml and sitemap-posttype-post.2013.xml are no longer there... The old yearly sitemaps will still give the same errors but as they are no longer listed in the sitemap index, Google should not run into the errors again :)

Do not give these old ones to Google Webmaster Tools. Just the main sitemap.xml index and then let Google take some time to revisit the index and follow each monthly entry.

I went and rebuilt the index.. and will be waiting for google to reindex and see what happens.

we only submit the sitemap.xml (index) and sitemap-news.xml to google webmaster tools so it should be fine now.

a quick validation check of a random file from 2013 validates so its seems all good now.

    thanks so much :)

I've found the xml feeds are broken in WP 3.9.1, with no plugins active and the default theme.

@Tom Keyser - you might need to go to Settings > Permalinks and resave your current settings. If that does not solve the issue, then please share a link to your site so I can take a look. Otherwise, there are some troubleshooting tips starting after "I get an ERROR when opening the sitemap or robots.txt!" on http://wordpress.org/plugins/xml-sitemap-feed/faq/

Thanks for the feedback. None of that helped.

    http://diamondsprings.crwe-pr.com/ is the site url

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

again, WP 3.9.1, with no plugins active and the Twenty Fourteen theme.

@Tom Keyser - I see no evidence the plugin is active at all: http://diamondsprings.crwe-pr.com/?feed=sitemap does not create a feed an http://diamondsprings.crwe-pr.com/robots.txt does not show "Sitemap: http://diamondsprings.crwe-pr.com/sitemap.xml" as it should... Do you have any XML Sitemap related options on your Settings > Reading page? And if so, do you have the main XML Sitemap option activated?
