Support » Fixing WordPress » Help Please with Call to undefined function get_option() message

  • Please help – I’m a total newbie and am getting the following error Call to undefined function get_option() in /home/scrappystampersg/public_html/index.php on line 9.

This error first appeared after switching themes. I have since switched back and deleted the onetone theme but still getting this error.

    How do I fix this?

Please note, I will need details like what folders to reference in cPanel and such (I’ve searched this forum and googled this issue and tried things with no luck – but again, maybe just not clear what I’m doing…).

Thank you for your help in advance – it is much appreciated!!!

There is no call to get_option in index.php, so let’s replace that file by doing a manual update of WordPress: https://codex.wordpress.org/Updating_WordPress#Manual_Update

    Hi Steve,

This is taking me a bit as I’m doing this via cPanel and it won’t let me copy a directory over – only one file at a time. If I’m being “dumb” and there is a quicker way please let me know. For example, it appears like I could add a FTP account to cPanel – where would I set up an FT account???

    THANK YOU!

I think I figured out the FTP thing – thanks. I’ll let you know when I get through all the other steps – again, appreciate your help!

    Hi Steve,

I have completed all of the steps and, unfortunately, still have the same issue. Can you please take a look and see what you think the issue is now?

    Many many thanks!

Please take a screenshot of the files in public_html and put it on imgur.com, then paste a link to that here.

Took a screenshot and put on screencast at https://www.screencast.com/t/vBZlWZdk9

Is that okay or do I need to signup for imgur.com?

that’s ok. and you don’t need to sign up for imgur.

The issue is that your site is actually in public_html/wp, not public_html.

    See https://codex.wordpress.org/Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory#Method_I_.28Without_URL_change.29

You’ve already done step 1, so start with step 2. As you already have an .htaccess file, you’ll probably have to edit/change it.

Well, I wish I understood how that happened but I did step 2 in the link above and it worked. So, although this is tough for me (as I like to understand), I will do my best to “let it go” and be thankful it works again. THANK YOU Steve!

ok Steve – appears I hit the resolve button too soon – although I now have a different issue <sigh>. When clicking Customize on any theme (have tried 3) I get this error:

Fatal error: Class ‘WP_Customize_Themes_Section’ not found in /home/scrappystampersg/public_html/wp/wp-includes/class-wp-customize-manager.php on line 3748

I once again humbly ask for your – or anyone else’s assistance. Thanks!

On the Updates tab on the dashboard, click the button to reinstall WordPress. It sounds like a file may still be missing.

Okay – did that and now get a different error. <sigh> A 404 error? Please see screenshot:

Again, this is when I go to customize – doesn’t matter what theme…

    Thanks, Steve!

Try logging out, clearing your browser cache, and then back in.

sadly that didn’t work, Steve. Even tried another browser just to be sure – same 404 error when I click on Customize.

I’m not sure I could mess things up this much if I tried – what the???

Thanks for hanging in there with me. I’m looking forward to your next suggestion!
