Help change text color & insert links

I just updated to 4.0. Two problems so far:

1. On my 1st post, I clicked the text color icon and nothing happened, other than a very small, square empty box opened up under the T.

2. I wanted to insert a linked, clicked on the icon and nothing happened.

I’m very much a plug-and-play guy. Technical instructions will leave me more frustrated than I already am.
