• I have been working with wordpress for about 6 months and everything that I have learned is just from fiddling around, not actual knowledge; so bear with me!

Last night I was installing a new theme to my blog. I deactivated all of my plug-ins, installed and activated the theme, and everything was working fine. I went back to my plugin area of my admin and began to reactivate some of the plugins. I am not sure which one I was activating, but then after I hit activate, it returned a blank white page.

Now everything is blank white pages. I can not get into my admin or dashboard at all. I know that it is probably not on the server end since my photoblog is still working fine.

I tried to go into my Phpadmin (or whatever it is called) and restore, but when I log in, it is also a blank page.

I can access my database files through my yahoo server and it appears to all be in tact. I tried to restore from a backup from last week, page by page and file by file, but still blank pages.

I downloaded an exact copy of every file through my FTP to ensure that I had not lost anything. BUt I don’t have a clue.

My blog is still showing up in the RSS feed, so I am assuming that is a good sign, but if I try to click on links to posts from there, it says that the requested URL was not found.

I am at a loss here and have been researching and tweaking since 10 pm last night now and I am freaking out and just want my blog back.

Also, how do I look at my database to verify that my actual posts are still there. I know that they are saved somewhere within the database system. Where the heck are they? I just want to make sure that I still have my posts.

I have also tried to replace all of the wp-files, no luck.

    AHHHHHHHHH please help.

    The site is http://www.reddephotography.com/blog/
the feed that still is working is feed://reddephotography.com/blog/feed/

  • Try removing your plugins folder from the server (retain a copy for yourself on your computer). Then add and activate each plugin one by one. If the offending plugin acts up, then you’ll know exactly which one did it.

Hm. This is a little confusing because, if you’re just installing a new theme, that should be only one folder in the /wp-contents folder. And, as far as I know, you don’t have to deactivate plugins to install a theme — that would be required only where you’re upgrading WordPress.

So, that brings us to what happened when you installed the theme. What did you do exactly?

What is bothering me here is that PHPmyadmin should show a blank page; that is unusual, to say the least, and should not be happening.

    What plugins did you activate?

I’m also wondering if you (a) specified that the home page or WP folder where other than they were before you installed the theme, or (b) overwrote or deleted other files; such as the .htaccess file which would control … well, much.

Can you explain (other than deactivating plugins) what precisely you did, what you uploaded and where?

I tried removing the plugins, and I still can not access my admin at all to be able to do anything further. So if I tried to reinstall them, it would not matter as I can not get to anything to be able to activate them again.

I once again tried to delete the plug-ins folder in its entirety and then try to go into my dashboard. Nothing is there. It is still blank. Should I put the plug-ins back or jut leave them out for now.

The weirded is that I can not even get into my phpadmin at all. I can see the backup file in my database when I look directly on my server but when I log into phpadmin, I have a blank screen with a header on the top, no database info at aoo

    Diane;

I was trying to use Binary Blue theme. I downloaded it and then uploaded it directly to themes. It says in their install instructions to deactivate plugins prior to install. which I did. I activated the theme and it looked fabulous.

I wanted to add some of my plug-ins back in (mistake I guess) so I went to my plugin menu. I believe that the culprit was when I activated either one of my flickr plugins or possibly BA stats. I have tried to retrace my steps via looking through my history; but since now everything went blank, if I backtrack it is blank as well.

This is so weird and I am totally at a loss.

I don’t care about anything other than making sure that my posts are still there somewhere, they are from a trip abroad and I am freaking that they are gone. Where does wordpress really hide them and is there any way to make sure that they are there or to get them out. I can not do an import into a new blog since I can not get into admin screens at all.

I would even give someone all of my passwords to see if they can see what the heck is going on. I am so lost in it all now.

Also, I have read a lot about the .htaccess file. I know that some servers hide it. I can’t seem to find it in there anywhere. I even looked at my other working blog for one for it and do not see it.

I don’t know if anything was overwritten by activating the plugins. But, I know that I did not knowingly change any of my directories or folders

    Okay.

The posts are in the database, not in the WordPress folders and files. If you or your web host can do a backup, that would be essential. (Actually, it’s best to do the backup before you do anything new, but it’s a little late for that; however, as you mentioned that the database files still seem to be there, that’s the good news.)

The first thing I would do at this point is to ask your web host to do a database backup (a “mysqldump”).

After that, we can sort out just what went wrong here, which is a little mystifying.

Hmmm. Have you tried dumping your browser cache?
I ask because I can see your blog just fine at http://www.reddephotography.com/

Oops. I take it back; I get the blank page at the Journal link.

where in the database are the posts. I know that must sound like a stupid question. But I can not seem to find them anywhere. I have also looked around in my database for my posts for my photoblog, but cant seem to find them either. Is it possible that they are hidden? I have my wordpress hosted through yahoo and set it up directly through them. I am going to look around via ftp and see if I can see them. I have emailed yahoo as well and they have not contacted me.

I can’t do a backup through myphpsql or whatever it is called but I did go on to my host via my ftp and copied everything to my hard drive. But don’t see posts in there either.

    ahhhhh
    thanks for the help though
    🙁

    NO, no, no.
Posts CAN’T be downloaded via ftp. They are stored in a MySQL databse. Your host should provide you with PHPmyAdmin to view the MySQL databse. From there you can “export” the database.
If this is beyond you. Ask your host to export the MySQL database for you or help you out.
When you have accomplished that – come back and we’ll get you going again.

OK, I went into my PHPmyAdmin and did a backup via the instructions at http://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/backup/

I now have a file named blog.sql on my desktop, but forgive me if I sound stupid, it seems small for that many posts, only 3.8 mb? who am I to know a darn thing anyway.

    So now what….

And can I verify that I did it right before I dump anything else?

But thank god, the posts are still there! Yippee

    Okay. That’s bit of relief #1. 🙂

The blog.sql is a mysqldump of the blog posts and other settings. Keep that safe (along with the files you downloaded) and don’t touch them. If you need to edit them, make a copy first. (Copies are good.)

Next, are you able to log into your admin panel? I thought you said you couldn’t, but let me know. If you can, I’d try switching back to another theme to see if it fixes things; if so, then there’s something wrong with the theme.

Hm. Something like this could be the problem: the theme was set up for the blog to be in the main site directory (e.g., site.com) rather than a subdirectory. Although that *shouldn’t* be a problem, I’m just thinking aloud. Did it also include a new index.php page for the “root” of your blog?

    Thread Starter photorenedde

    (@photorenedde)

I can log into my phpMyAdmin SQL area and I can log into my server on my host. But if I try to do anything within wordpress admin (dashboard like stuff) any of the pages are blank.

My thoughts were this… Now that I have a back up of all the data, should I just dump everything on my server (or) do a dump in my phpMyAdmin area and then do a fresh install of wordpress and import the data from what I just saved? But, I don’t know this; If I do that and I try to import my info that I just got from my sql, would it not work since the last theme that i used would not even be in there? Does that make any sense?

There is no new index.php page (honestly if there was it is gone since I tried to revert everything back to how it was through restore)

Did you check with your host to make sure they didn’t change one of the backend programs just as you were doing your theme change? Like php, mysql, apache?

If you dump everything and do a fresh install, as long as the default theme is in there, you should be fine. But do some further checking before you go so far….

    Thread Starter photorenedde

    (@photorenedde)

I have tried to contact my host three times now and have not gotten a response.

I have another blog on the same host and it is fine, so I don’t think that it is that much of a coincidence.

If I do decide to dump it all do I dump it only in phpMyAdmin or do I do it through my file manager of my server… or both? I see the restore from backup instructions on wordpress, but I want it all fresh and clean and then just to import my posts and stuff. I want all new css and the like everywhere, no boo boos anywhere. just can’t lose my posts….

The files you delete through your file manager or your ftp client. In phpMyAdmin, you just need to drop all the tables, NOT the whole database.

Here’s a tutorial which might help: http://tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/restore/ – and if you’re using 2.0.5, I think you can ignore the header re /wp-content/cache directory….
