It says “Show headings by custom depth (From H2 to H6).” Does this mean it always show H1 and H1 can’t be deselected or does it mean that it never shows H1?

H1 is not processed at all, hence it will not show on the actual TOC. There is no option to have it display either since H1 is meant to be the post title, it is not relevent to appear on the TOC.

Currently I use “Easy table of contents” and it displays H1 (if I tell it to do so). Please have a look at: https://science-network.tv/philosophy-of-science/ Interesting that you say that H1 is not intended to be used at all. Is there a WP consensus around that (something you can link to)?

According to the web standards, the H1 tag is only meant to appear once on the page (see https://www.w3schools.com/tags/tag_hn.asp).

Note: Only use one <h1> per page – this should represent the main heading/subject for the whole page. Also, do not skip heading levels – start with <h1>, then use <h2>, and so on.

Usually it used for the page title and it has no reason to appear anywhere else. Using H1 more than once is possible and the browser will render it, but it should not be done as per the web standards.

The page you referred me to has more than one H1 tag and is not considered a good practice.

Technically, it could be easily implemented into Joli TOC, but for the aforementioned reason, H1 tags are not processed at all.

I have searched a bit and found several websites supporting your claim. However, I also found a few stating that it is OK to have more than one H1 on a single web page: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyqJJXWk0gk
I think you have a valid point and I will reconsider my use of H1 tags. Thanks for pointing me to this that I had completely missed before.

Let’s say that it can work ok to have multiple H1s but I would personally not recommand it.

Thank you for the link, that was interesting.
