header.php text has disappeared

    Hi there need a little help, I have just being working on a website and tried to put in a google webmaster tools meta tag on the page.

    So I added the text to the head section in header.php and for some reason the whole website has gone wacko, then when I went back in to header.php there is not text there what so ever.

    How can this be rectified, as the coding was clearly telling a plugin how to work and now the whole website is in turmoil.

    I have downloaded the theme I was using again and copy and pasted the coding back in then click update.

    It then comes up with a message to say the file was updated but the box is still blank

    Can anyone help with this as things are going from bad to worse I cannot seem to find why my coding just disappears.

    Many posts about iframes doing the same thing but this is the header.php file from a backup that I am trying to paste back in and it just says it has been updated yet it disappears, the box is empty.
