Most likely you just have to select the Full screen slider option in the Customize → Header area → Header type section once again.

I’m not sure why it happened exactly, but please remember about importance of regular full site backups (files and database):

Okie dokie! My pictures/settings for that field didn’t go away, surprisingly, but somehow the setting for what to display got reset.
