header image from CSS not customizer

My child theme is set up to have the header displayed but it’s not showing up. The header seen on the site now is from the customizer header set-up. This would be ok, but with the way it is now, the background for the whole header is supposed to be red and now I have a white background around the header widget. The customizer does not have a setting for the background color, that I can see.

When I remove the header images from the customizer, there is no header image at all. It would seem that I need to remove the customizer option entirely, how would I do this?
