As a new WordPress user, I feel confident that the best practices are taken care of with this plugin. Watching the frequent updates with contributions by multiple developers also gives me confidence that there’s a whole team out there watching out for my security.
Note for new installs: This should be the very first plugin to be installed and configured, before installing anything else. It can change fundamental settings (such as DB prefix and folder locations), so other plugins would work smoothly if installed after this one is configured, not before.
