Has anybody a Blog-By-Email-setup?? (19 posts)

I played like 3 hours to get Blog-By-Email working, since I'll go on vacation in a week and want to use my mobile to post to my blog using email.

    Unfortunately I can't access the POP3-Server using WordPress (wp-mail.php).
I followed the instruction in the wiki and I'm able to get Mail from the account using my Email-client with exactly the same settings.

    wp-mail-php gives me only:

Ooops POP3 connect: Error [110] [Connection timed out]

    I'm using WordPress

Any suggestions? I really want to blog during my trip :-)

    regards from Berlin

One way to go would be to use Flickr. You can post all your pix there and then pull them into your blog using the Flickr-rss plugin.

just a thought in case you dont find a better way ;)

Thanks, I'll take a look at the flickr-Plugin.

But my intention was also to write text on my mobile and post that to wordpress using the Blog-by-Mail function.

It works for me on and a standard POP3 mailserver. I know your intent is to send posts from a phone, but are you doing that now or sending them from a regular email application?

You might try using a couple different applications to send the post and see what happens.

Is this a standard POP3 account, or is it using a different protocol like IMAP or POP3s (secure POP)? Also, are you trying to use a webmail account (i.e. Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo, etc) to receive the posts?

If it's not POP3, you may need to either use a regular POP3 account or hack wp-mail.php. See the Codex for links to alternate wp-mail files.

Thanks for the answer - I see light at the end of the tunnel :-)
If you can Blog-by-Mail than it can be possible.

I'm using a normal POP3 account (gmx.de) without SSL. I can easily check it with Apple's Mail and regular settings for a POP3 Server.

Do you know any provider who provides free mail accounts that will work with wordpress?

I'm sending my email from my iBook, not from the phone - anyway, since WordPress is not able to connect to the Mailserver, I guess its a WordPress-Problem.

I really need this feature ...

I download the postie-plugin, and tried all (!) of my different EMail-Accounts, POP3, IMAP, SSL ... nothing worked.
    I got these error-messages:

Missing imagecreatefromgif Connecting to pop3.web.de:110 (pop3)) Mail Connection Time Out Common Reasons: Server Down Network Issue Port/Protocol MisMatch Ooops POP3 connect: Error [110] [Connection timed out]

For errortracking, it would be nice if someone, who has a working blog-by-mail setup, would try to access my emailservers. I would send login/password in a privat email.

I don't think you're having a WordPress problem. I'll contact you by email using the address on the blog listed in your profile. There are a couple troubleshooting steps we can take and I can provide a temporary POP3 account to test against.

I have the same problem as that above. I have tried 3 different pop3 email accounts with postie, and the wordpress standard wp-mail. Nothing works, error is always:
    Connecting to pop.dzinerserver.com:110 (pop3))
    Mail Connection Time Out
    Common Reasons:
    Server Down
    Network Issue
    Port/Protocol MisMatch
Ooops POP3 connect: Error [13] [Permission denied]

    I have Wp
    Postie plugin.
Shared hosting on Unix virtual server from dzinersolutions.
PHP 4.3.10 CGI version installed on server.

The only thing seemingly not allowed is: "Please note that chat/IRC, web proxy and mailing list scripts are not allowed on our network under any circumstances. See our Acceptable Use Policy for more information."

Outlook/Thunderbird access the pop3 email boxes/accounts no problems.
Someone out there must know what's going on! :)

    Hi Scorpiotaz,

    really annoying problem, right?
Dedge was so kind and spent some time to check my blog, my settings and my mail-accounts and came to the solution that it's not a wordpress problem but something that's wrong with your provider who hosts your blog.

I've asked my provider to check the configuration and remove all barriers so that blog-by-mail is working. As soon as I got an answer I'll send you more information.

Be strong - blog-by-mail can be done.

OK. Latest update. My server does not support mod_rewrite on shared basis. Have to pay more for low contention server.
Oh well, off for research then!

Yuck! Have you considered moving to a different hosting provider? mod_rewrite is a standard feature offered by most hosting providers.

Working with xphilx on this issue, I never did determine exactly what was going on with his web server, but I was able to definitively prove that his WP (1513) files were good, his individual settings were fine, and his email server was not at fault.

For my part, I highly recommend Laughing Squid web hosting. They're not the cheapest, but they're also not a big corporation. They're not trying to make a huge profit or sell your account to MegaBlortHostCo. You can call up and talk to an intelligent person who listens, thinks, and doesn't follow some robotic "we provide excellent customer service" script. Plus they're very WP-friendly.

Hi. I´ve installed the postie -thing ok and it works. Only pics can be seen only in lettersnumberscharacters all in a huge mess - no pic seen. So nothing happens after the postie was installed, it changes anything :/

Can you tell me how to get cronless postie working. Currently I can only update manually.

Ok, I found a solution that works for me.

I had postie set up a-ok, manual run working but wp-cron not fetching anything. googled a bit and found this:
in german, but with some english instructions.

You gotta add some lines to wp-cron.php to get it working with postie.

    Hope this helps!
