  • Hello, I’m new to all of this. I’m trying to decide what open source platform I’m going to use for my website. Perhaps the most critical criteria is that if successful, my website will be host to millions of articles written by the visitors who come to the website.

First, I know WordPress is first and foremost a blogging platform. However, can it run a website of this magnitude? People will eventually have the ability to search the site and all its articles.

Second, can anyone direct me to a site that uses WordPress and has to keep track of millions (not thousands) of small articles?

Thank you very much for you time and effort.

    Scott

  • WordPress can handle billions of articles if you can create that much content. Look at wp.com, it’s massive. It’s one of the top 50 sites in the world right now.

You’ll need additional hardware, but WordPress can definitely handle millions of posts.

WordPress.com is WPMU, and while I want to say ‘Sure!’ I think it’d be safer to say ‘Sure! In theory.’

I suspect it really would be more a limitation of the database size than anything else. You’d need a pretty hefty setup to serve up millions of articles, as jdingman says.

    In theory: Yeah, you’re fine.

    That SAID!

my website will be host to millions of articles written by the visitors who come to the website.

That’ll be tough to implement AND to monitor. It’ll take a lot of manpower to look out for spam posts etc. So … yeah, that’ll be more of a problem IMO than the volume of articles.
