• hi all,

i just finished coding up a sailing site – wouldn’t mind a bit of critique… i’m still sorting out some ie6 & 7 issues, but under safari/ff/opera all seems good. if you’re running something odd and it all breaks, i’d be most appreciative if you could let me know. cheers, r.

    the site is: http://www.bigoceans.com/

  • It’s blue and white, seems to fit the “sailing type” of blog.. Not sure I care for that layout, or color scheme though, but.. thanks for sharing! 😉

    ouch… harsh.

    can’t win ’em all.

Hahaha.. Got that right sunny! =P Nah, after looking at it again, it’s not that bad actually.. =)

OOOOO – Nick, I love it. It’s perfect for your premise…. Add some real content, and you’ve got a potential winner.

And as far as “harsh” – heh, wait until someone besides spence lands on you…. he just doesn’t like blue prob’ly!

Fabulous layout and design. Happy sailing!

    thanks spencerp 🙂

vkaryl – what do you mean by ‘add some real content’? i know it isn’t updated daily just yet (it will be) but what other content are you envisioning?

    danke wairoanz!

you appear to be using the static front page dohicky, since you have content thats more current than the post thats on the front page now — its nice that youre giving credit, but if it were me:

    1. make a credits page, do that there.
    2. let the most recent post fill that spot.

well, i use the static frontpage plugin, but i hacked a ‘home’ template which contains the most recent blog entry at the bottom. you are right though, there may be a better way to show there is new content on the site. i was wary of it being just a blog when you reach the frontpage of the site however… my mode of thinking was to include a short blurb on the frontpage to make it clear what it is about etc.

there is a credits page, or rather a sponsors page at /sponsors.

Just your daily content…. I think it bids fair to be an interesting stop on my round of reads, so some further expansion of content would be lovely….

[Hmmm. And my apologies. I went back just now, and realize the sidebar – showing several months of archives – didn’t completely load the other day…. which was why I was looking for “more content”.]

It’s nice, but the content is in the least important spot – the bottom right of the screen. I’d switch it up with ‘sponsors’ sidebar.

    thanks vkaryl!

theiconoclast31 i hear you, but it’s a bit too far in to do such a big redesign. however you are right, the main content shouldnt be so hidden. i might bring everything up on the right column and move the logo up too closer to the wave… thanks all, r

Hey, Nick…. (or ryann? whichever….) – there’s nothing wrong with where your posts appear. They’re set off nicely by the big white area, so I wouldn’t worry….

vkaryl, that’s fine, but there’s no reason to have two menus before we get to the content, regardless of the bold background. I’ve never seen that before, and I think there’s a reason why.

I don’t want to argue this with you, but that’s how I explain my reasoning. I’ll leave it at that.

But don’t get me wrong, I like everything else about the design.

3col themes always have “2 menus”…. no argument really, just that it’s (to me) fine the way it is.
