• My blog has been hacked (readers trying to post comments got screens of Canadian Viagra stuff). I backed up the hacked directory, deleted it on the server and used EasyWP Installer to install a newer version of WP (the reason I previously had an older version was that my host couldn’t handle the higher-level PHP, but when I told the host about the hacking they moved me to another server).

However I couldn’t get into my dashboard with the new version (wouldn’t accept my password), so I deleted the newer directory and have re-uploaded my backup directory of the hacked older version (better to have a partly-functional hacked blog than none at all). But now I can’t get even the login window. When I go to this link
    http://www.englishspeechservices.com/blog/wp-login.php
I get “Error establishing a database connection”.

Now I have nothing. Having spent many hours reading but not really understanding a number of pages and posts about hacking and solutions, I have zero expectation of being able to de-hack the blog, and below-zero expectation of avoiding it happening again. So all I want is to put the hacked blog back up and leave it there (with commenting disabled) until I build up the motivation to start a blog at wp.com or blogspot, which I never wanted to do in the first place since I only wanted a blog within my website.

If anyone has any suggestions, thanks very much in advance.

I previously had an older version

    what was the previous version?

The database structure often changes between versions. The implication is that, for example, one cannot import a pre 3x database into a 3x install and expect it to work. You need to install your original version of WordPress, import your db dump and then start upgrading, incrementally.

    Thanks for replying.

    I think I had WP 3.1.4.

So re-uploading the old blog directory isn’t installing it? What else do I do?
