  • So I’ve been pulling my hair out all morning. I received news that my website was hacked and I went through some resources to help me regain control of my admin account. Now I’m pretty simple when it comes to WordPress. I don’t know code and much of the technical jargon is over my head. I use the site as my portfolio.

Anyway, I used FileZilla to delete the file directories as instructed. Afterward, I uploaded the newest version of WordPress to FileZilla and proceeded to do the same with my theme I purchased sometime last year. Nothing changed. Now my website is completely gone. I still have my portfolio images saved on my external and I have my videos on my YouTube channel. Plus I went ahead and copied all of my blog posts. Do I need to start from scratch? Is there anyway I can keep using my domain name via WordPress?

If ANYONE has any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated.

  • Ugh, that’s horrible – sorry to hear about all that mess you’re dealing with.

WordPress.ORG does not host any sites – are you thinking about a WordPress.COM hosted site? You CAN use your own domain name there, yes – I think it’s $13 per year. For more info, you can visit their forums here:

Thanks for the response. Yea its been pretty stressful to say the least haha.

I purchased the domain via, but I built the site through At this point, I’m totally ok with rebuilding the site from scratch. I need to know how I can get started. Right now the site greets me with the following:

You don’t have permission to access / on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

    Apache Server at Port 80

I still can’t access my admin account and therefore can’t make any changes. Do you think I did something wrong in the upload phase? I downloaded the newest version today and pretty much just tossed it into FileZilla. Again, I’m not very tech savvy. I haven’t had to do any of this since I launched the site about a year ago so my memory on how this process works is, well… nonexistent.

Thanks again for the prompt response.

If you are going to start all over, it might be easiest to ask GoDaddy to wipe everything (including your database) and then use their automated install (I’m pretty sure they offer a 1-click install)?

    Was the database hacked too?

First thing you need to do is backup your database as that is where all settings and content like pages and posts are saved.

Did you overwrite wp-content folder if so then you have lost your uploads should never overwrite wp-content folder.

I would check with your host if they have backup as most major host company keep backup and see if they can restore your wordpress.

Thank you guys so much for the help.

Right now, I’m not sure if I can answer your questions with certainty. I’m gonna go ahead and get in touch with GoDaddy to see if they can help.

The good thing is I do have everything backed up. All of my content is sitting safely on my external.

Thanks again everyone! I’ll let you know how it goes over.
