  • I like the concept of Gutenberg, but there is one design flaw: no way to edit from the WordPress toolbar. When viewing a page or post, there is no way to choose whether you want the Gutenberg or Classic editor. The only way to do this is to go into the backend, list all pages or all posts, select the editor option and then edit the content. This cumbersome method wastes time.

When/Will there be a way to edit content from the front-end? Until that time, Gutenberg is not practical.

    Thanks.

  • I don’t really see the flaw you’re speaking of. The functionality is there to edit the post in the “standard” editor. Right now this would be the classic editor, if you have the Gutenberg-Plugin installed, Gutenberg.

As soon as Gutenberg is in the WordPress core, this functionality probably switches: If you have the classic editor plugin installed, it will take you to the classic editor, if not, it will take you to Gutenberg.

It was never intended to have both Editors running and choose which one you’ll use on a post-by-post basis, so an option to choose the editor from the front page is not planned (as far as I know)

Also, are you referring to the “Edit” button on the front end, which then takes you to the editor in the Dashboard, or are you using a special front-end editor plugin that embeds an editor on the front of the site (without a redirect to the editor in the Dashboard)?

This site has the classic editor plugin installed as well as Gutenberg. I get a choice in the toolbar:

My site’s toolbar doesn’t look that way. There is only the “Edit Page” option – which (if Gutenberg is active) goes to the Gutenberg editor. Some pages are okay with Gutenberg, but some don’t. For instance, I use Avada, which uses its own custom editor to display the code correctly.

James: I’m referring to the former – the “edit” button on the front-end.

Update: I have found a plugin that gives me the option to use either the “classic” editor or Gutenberg depending on taxonomy. “Gutenberg Manager” (unCommons Team) lets me disable the Gutenberg editor for Pages. This makes Gutenberg a workable editor for Posts. (Perhaps a ‘disable taxonomy’ option could be added to Gutenberg.)
