Support » Plugin: Gutenberg » Gutenberg doesn’t load my custom page template

  • Well I took a dive into Gutenberg believing this new and innovative block based editor will be great until I bumped into this small setback.

I realized posts created using Gutenberg does not load my custom page template at all despite choosing it from drop down menu in the page attributes tab. I have things like banners and sub menus and other aesthetic elements in that page template so I cannot just overlook this.

Luckily there’s still the classic editor as saving grace. How was I sure that Gutenberg is the issue? Well I created the page using Gutenberg and it didn’t load the page template it’s supposed to. Then I edited the same page with classic editor, not doing much but simply open it and update it (although moving away from Gutenberg makes it lose its category which I had to pick from drop down) and viola! it returns to how it is supposed to be! So I am not ready to go Gutenberg at this point.

  • Page templates often go out of date. This is why there are “theme updates”. If you have an outdated child theme page template. Compare it to the same file in the parent theme and see what is missing/changed.

Now that you mentioned themes. There are some themes I haven’t updated out of fear that they will ruin my custom themes. They are something called Twenty Fourteen, Twenty Fifteen and Twenty Sixteen or so.

Thanks for pointing this out, I’ll give it a try when I have the time to do so.

    Hiya,

Sorry to hear about your issue with page templates there, they should work, so this may simply be a matter of a plugin or theme conflict.

I did just test, and page templates do work fine, what you can do to troubleshoot things is use the Health Check plugin, it allows you to enter Troubleshooting Mode, where you can enable one plugin at a time (or switch themes) without affecting site visitors. You can then test to find out if it’s a plugin causing issues in this scenario.

    Hi,

Thanks for the kind advice. I’ll give it a try.
