 * Are you perchance working on a footnotes block for Gutenberg?

 * [@earl_d](https://wordpress.org/support/users/earl_d/),
 * Thanks for the topic. To insert the Footnotes reference container like a block
   in Gutenberg, please insert a shortcode block with this shortcode or whatever
   you may wish to configure in its stead:
 * `[‌[references]‌]`
 * The project is still struggling with fixing bugs and getting the codebase and
   the workflow right. It’s fixed, but I’m afraid adding a dedicated block to the
   Gutenberg block library won’t make it into a release anytime soon.
 * Just use a shortcode block, and even `{[]}` inside would do it if that’s configured
   to be the reference container shortcode. Yet easier: Using a shortcode block—
   as opposed to just typing the shortcode in a paragraph—is not required as it
   only works around the empty paragraphs before and after, and these can be mitigated
   by setting appropriate (negative) margins above and below the reference container.
 * We’d love to learn if this solution works out worse, equally or better than a
   Gutenberg block for the footnotes list.
 * Thank you!

 * The suggested solution is superior to using a block, because it doesn’t require
   to open the block library.
 * As we haven’t received a response, I’ll mark this as resolved. Please feel free
   to reopen this topic if you encounter any issues, or open a new support topic
   and we’d be happy to assist.
 * Best regards.

 * Didn’t have a chance to get back to this until now. Will try what you suggest
   and get back. I was just looking for a way to use the footnotes in the block
   editor.

 * [@earl_d](https://wordpress.org/support/users/earl_d/),
 * I’ve marked your topic as unresolved again. No worries.
 * Sorry for misunderstanding your concern. The easiest way of using Footnotes in
   the Block Editor is to not do anything beside bracketing the footnote texts inline.
   The reference container is appended by default at the end of the post without
   any further action on your part. The position shortcode is only needed to raise
   the container.

 * [@earl_d](https://wordpress.org/support/users/earl_d/),
 * Just found an email alert reporting that you responded more than two hours ago
   in this thread, but your post is missing. What happened?
 * As you may have edited your post during the one hour delay granted by the Forum
   engine, I’m not entitled to quote your initial post received by email.
 * To create a footnote using the `[fn]` start shortcode and the `[/fn]` end shortcode,
   the initial process involves four steps:
    1. Open Footnotes’ settings dashboard and make sure these shortcodes are selected
       under the “General settings” tab in the “Footnote start and end short codes”
       metabox. Else, select `[fn]` (its closing sibling will be set automatically),
       and click the “Save Changes” button near the bottom.
    2. In the blog post you are writing, type `[fn]` immediately after the word or
       the punctuation mark where the footnote referrer shall appear.
    3. Write the text of the footnote.
    4. After the end of the footnote, type `[/fn]`.
 * In the presence of at least one footnote in a post or page, a reference container
   will be created and appended automatically at the end of the post or page content.
   A third shortcode, for the reference container position, is needed only if the
   reference container shall appear in the post before the end, e.g. when you provide
   a list of links or a bibliography to be displayed after the reference container
   instead of before. That shortcode is the only one out of these three that you
   may wish to type in a shortcode block, but that only removes some extra spacing
   above and below the reference container.
 * Be sure to keep in touch should that not work for you, and feel free to post
   any feedback, we’d be happy to help and learn how you think about using Footnotes.

 * Thanks for the response I deleted the post because I realized I was using the
   wrong container code. Marking this as resolved.
