• Basically brand new to customizing WordPress templates. I’m hoping to get some tips on customizing my category pages – specifically on how they are displaying subcategory content.

Currently, my category page shows excerpts for each post of the parent AND any child category posts. But for child categories, I’d like it to show the child category title + description + first post’s featured image — basically a custom excerpt for the child category instead of actually displaying the child category’s posts.

Any help in where I should be looking/editing is appreciated. Thanks!

I can’t guarantee it’s the best or most proper solution, but I was able to accomplish what I needed using a plugin called “List category posts” and just creating the pages I needed that displayed my various categories.

Otherwise, I think you can make a custom display based on the category/subcategory by including custom category templates: https://codex.wordpress.org/Category_Templates

Hope that helps, best of luck.
