• Hi, I’ve got my wordpress site working well but the avatars/gravatars aren’t working properly.

The avatar choices in Settings>Discussion are all the same image. This image is either the image that has been uploaded to the user’s profile (to be used as their profile picture), or is the Gravatar logo. This effectively means that I cannot choose a different avatar to appear for the user unless I upload a picture for them. This in itself is not a big problem but I cannot change the default avatar.

I want to be able to set the default avatar as something other than the Gravatar logo, but there appears to be no simple way of altering the default. I have tried using the Add New Default Avatar plugin, but this has absolutely no effect. I have also followed numerous online tutorials to add code to the functions.php file within my theme, but nothing has worked. I have also attempted to use code to stop WordPress automatically contacting Gravatar.com for the default image but again with no luck.

All I want to be able to do is to change the default avatar to a file on my server, but this seems impossible. Maybe there is some corruption somewhere. I would really appreciate someone’s help on this!

  • I’m posting this because it’s taken me six months to figure out why my Gravatar was not being displayed on my blog. This is pretty simple, but well-hidden. Our blog, CaliforniaWineFan.com discusses wine (big surprise). It turns out that either Gravatar or me assigned the site a PG rating. However, on the blog itself the rating was G. And the Gravatar for G rated sites is the default. Here’s how to see what’s happening.

Log in to Gravatar and find your primary e-mail address (usually at the top of the list). Look closely and you’ll see a link to “View Ratings.” Mine has the default Gravatar for G rated sites and my actual Gravatar for PG and higher.

I hope this saves a few people some time.
