Support » Plugin: WooCommerce » grand child items showing up under parent/child category

I don’t know if this is by design or not, bu with the categories I have an issue where the child items are appearing in their parent category’s page. Typing it out it sounds pretty normal but it’s annoying to keep track in the backend.

for example I have a the category of products

    parent(fire pits)
    – child (model name) (4 products)
    -grandchild (model accessories) (13 products)

Now when I click on the 4 products count to see which products for that child category it’s also dumping the 13 grandchild category items into that child category too even though those products don’t have that child category marked. So now I have 17 items listed under the [model name] category instead of 4. It creates a mess in the back end and it’s not ideal either to how I want the items to display on the front end either. If that makes sense.

    Hi!

This is normal behaviour for products that are in a subcategory – they will also appear in its parent category’s listings.

If you need further options for working with subcategory visibility in your current structure, using a plugin, you can try the extension Nested Category Layout. This gives you a ‘tidier’ way of displaying things, that may suit what you’re describing.

Another suggestion here would be to restructure how your products are organised. You could consider, for instance, placing the accessories in their own separate categories to isolate them from the actual fire pits. On the product pages, you could add them as cross-sells. Or you could use an extension such as Product Recommendations or Cart Upsell for WooCommerce to promote them to the right customers.

Finally, I did spot a way to show products in parent categories without the subcategory products, using some custom code (external link). I haven’t tested this solution but it might be worth a try! If you try this, I’d suggest using the plugin Code Snippets rather than editing your functions.php directly, as changes will be wiped out by theme updates otherwise.

Thank you, I just ended up moving the accessory children under the accessory parent, simpler that way
