    IANAL: Child Themes inherit the parent theme, so yes it’s reasonable to think that.

    However you need to be specific in this case. You need to look at the Child Theme in question and find the license from the authors/ developers.

    Do child themes of a GPL-theme automatically become GPL too or could they have other than GPL license?

    Yes, all child themes of any GPL’ed parent theme is GPL’ed too.

    Yes, this is the core of what I want to know.
    So can the author of a child theme to say: “I don’t care that this theme is GPL, my child theme is not GPL”. Is it possible?

    So can the author of a child theme to say: “I don’t care that this theme is GPL, my child theme is not GPL”. Is it possible?

    They would be wrong to say that. The child theme is a derivative of the parent theme and the child theme does not have a choice about this. Those are the terms of the GPL on that parent theme.

    If someone has a problem with this then they need to understand what GPL code is and how it applies. Any child theme author making that statement doesn’t.
