 * [5 years, 8 months ago](https://wordpress.org/support/topic/google_api_connection_fail-when-activating-plugin/)
 * I am setting up my site on a different machine, as the last one died, but seem
   to be having problems with the google site kit right off the starting line. As
   i activate it the plugin gives me an error before i can even do anyhting.
 * > Sign in with Google to set up Site Kit

 * I didn’t have this problem on the other machine. The difference is that now i
   am running the site under windows but i can’t imagine that being the cause of
   the issue. There is little difference other than that though. Same domain name,
   same ip, same version of wordpress and so on.
 * Any help would be appreciated. Love the site kit…. if it works.
    thanks.
 * The page I need help with: _[[log in](https://login.wordpress.org/?redirect_to=https%3A%2F%2Fwordpress.org%2Fsupport%2Ftopic%2Fgoogle_api_connection_fail-when-activating-plugin%2F%3Foutput_format%3Dmd&locale=en_US)

 * Did some more punching at the site kit to see if i could blunt force me through.
   I couldn’t.
 * I disabled all plugins except site kit.
    I opened incognito browser window. Tried
   different browser
 * No change
 * I even went and ignored the error message and went through the steps to setup
   the kit anyway.
 * I got through the steps allright, but when it wanted to return to the site kit
   on my site admin area i got:
 * You don’t have permissions to authenticate with Site Kit.
 * I had to return to the dashboard, and deactivate the site kit.
 * So basically i am no further than i was.
 * Please help.

 * Thanks for getting in touch, and providing the steps you’ve undertaken to troubleshoot.
   I noticed you don’t have any redirection in place (from http to https). Can you
   check for any redirection options available from your control panel dashboard
   before following the steps below:
    1. Install and activate the [Health Check & Troubleshooting](https://wordpress.org/plugins/health-check/)
       plugin.
    2. Navigate to “Plugins > Health Check & Troubleshooting > Troubleshoot”.
    3. From the same screen click on the “Available Plugins” tab at the top right and
       then click on the “Enable” option next to “Site Kit by Google”
    4. Attempt to setup Site Kit once more
 * You can [exit troubleshooting](https://i.imgur.com/Z4b1bk0.jpg) mode afterwards.
 * If the above fails please share the following:
    1. At what stages does setup fail
    2. Do you encounter a notice, error message or [console errors](https://imgur.com/KyLAzgH)?
    3. Can you share your current hosting provider?

 * First thing i did was fix the redirection. No longer an issue.
    no change to
   google site kit plugin problem though.
 * Then:
    Installing the healthcheck and troubleshooting plugin left me with a fresh
   new problem.
 * No troubleshooting options, plugin not listed in active, inactive or dropin plugins,
   plugin is active according to the new plugin installer.
 * also no exit troubleshooting mode options.
 * So…. at least i’ve got something to do other than the google site kit issue…..
 * The google site kit plugin setup fails right after clicking for activation.
 * after installing the google site kit plugin.
    It then shows:
 * `Sign in with Google to set up Site Kit
 * The Site Kit service will guide you through 3 simple setup steps.
 * Your site may not be ready for Site Kit
 * Looks like your site is having a technical issue with requesting data from Google
   services.
 * To get more help, ask a question on our support forum and include the text of
   the original error message:
 * google_api_connection_fail
 * It shows a button to start setup, but as i said it’s useless to go through the
   steps.
 * No other errors show up above the surface.
 * The console errors (below the surface i guess):
 * 1.

 * Personally i don’t think there’s much info in there either.

 * Well,
 * fiddling around, removing some plugins among other things, i have been able to
   get that troubleshooting plugin to appear, and function.
 * Alas google site kit plugin setup was not effected in any way.
 * You also asked what my current hosting provider was. It’s me!
    I’ve got an internet
   subscription with online.nl and i have setup a server on one of the systems on
   my lan. I set the modem/router to open ports 80 and 443 and forward them to the
   local ip of the machine hosting the server. Works like a charm.
 * Like i said, it has worked for almost a year up until the machine i was running
   the webserver and site on decided to die on me, and i was forced to host the
   site on Windows 10 instead of Linux (Xampp before Wampp now).
 * There is literally nothing different as far as i can tell, as nothing changed
   in the settings except on the router the MAC adress to which the static dhcp
   adress 192.168.1.69 was assigned changed. Now the windows box’s network card
   get’s the ip adress. The firewall rules, portforwarding and everything else haven’t
   changed.
 * On the DNS there was a small change. I used a subdomain before (deuzige.v0id.
   nl) and now i use a tlc domain (deuzige.ga)
 * Other than that… same old same old…
 * hope you can help me out here!! thanks in advance!

 * Many thanks for the update. It seems like a server configuration may be resulting
   in Site Kit not being able to authenticate your site. The plugin needs to be
   able to connect to [https://sitekit.withgoogle.com](https://sitekit.withgoogle.com).
 * If you’re using wp-cli you can check using the following command:
    `wp eval '
   print_r(wp_remote_head("https://sitekit.withgoogle.com"));'`
 * If you’re not using wp-cli can you setup another site on the same server and
   check for the same issue?

 * Thanks for providing an update. I may need to escalate this issue. Before I do
   so can you inform me of the below:
    1. Do other plugin installs work fine when installed via the admin panel?
    2. Did you try setup Site Kit previously when using a subdomain?
    3. Does the same issue arise if you temporarily deactivate your Firewall at host

 * Hi,
 * thanks for continuing to work with me to fix this issue. It’s really appreciated.
 * 1. Yes. Other plugin installs work perfectly. And before you ask, i did try and
   disable all other plugins to see if that worked. It didn’t.
    2. Yes i did. I
   actually had it working fine on deuzige.v0id.nl, which was my previous site,
   only to learn that Google adsense didn’t work on subdomains if you didn’t own
   the tld. That’s why i got myself a tld: deuzige.ga 3. I disabled every firewall
   there was to disable. On the windows host, on the router and i even tried throwing
   the darned thing into the DMZ but to no avail.
 * I’d really really hate to have to start completely from scratch, just to get
   the kit to work. Help me wordpress support forum one Kenobi… you’re my only hope….

    Christ

 * Ha, well I hope I can be of assistance. The team are looking into the domain
   registered on the Site Kit service now. In the meantime do you mind following
   the steps below to try and get connected?
    - Ensure all non secure traffic is redirected (I can access your http site at
      present)
    - [Disconnect](https://i.imgur.com/Sg7N1Tr.png) your account from Site Kit
    - Temporarily switch your “WordPress Address (URL)” and “Site Address (URL)”
      from [https://deuzige.ga/wordpress](https://deuzige.ga/wordpress) to [http://deuzige.ga/wordpress](http://deuzige.ga/wordpress)
      in your WordPress General Settings configuration.
    - Log back into your site once requested and then undo the changes you made (
      reverting back to the full address with https
    - Attempt setup once more
    - Let me know of the outcome of the above, or if you have any questions.
