Google toolbar spell check remnants

I’m not certain when it started happening (much less why) but Google spell checking has started to corrupt my WordPress posts.

When Google spell check finds misspelled words in a form, it wraps the work in a <span> tag along with a lot of text formatting to highlight the error. When the spell check is terminated, it used to remove the <span> tags.

Something broke and now the <span> tags remain, which have to be cleaned out of the HTML manually — very bothersome.

Currently on WordPress 2.6 and Google says the toolbar version is 3.1.20080730W (which I don’t call updating to — wonder if they are auto-updating against my will).

All advice is welcome.
