Google Sitemaps vs. Sitemap Generator

  • I was wondering which of the two plugins is better? Both are for creating sitemaps and I’m currently using the Google Sitemaps plugin, but I would like to have the option of excluding a category, which the Sitemap Generator provides.

    Here are the two links:

  • Hi boscardin,

the Google Sitemap Generator plugin generates a sitemap just for search engines in a special XML format, the Sitemap Generator by Dagon Design generates a “normal”, themed sitemap.

    You can use both 🙂

Oh, but for the Google one, even if it’s just going to search engines, I’d still like it to not list some posts in certain categories.

The one by Dagon, will that also send to search engines, or no?

As far as I know, the sitemap plugin by Dagon will create a normal sitemap only and not communicate with search engines.

In the XML Sitemap generator plugin, you can enter IDs of posts you don’t want to have included in the XML sitemap.

Yeah, I was afraid of that one. I have quite a bit of posts in that category that I don’t want to put in, but I suppose that would be a good way to go about it for now.

mark the post as private and it won’t end up in your google sitemap

The two plugins have nothing to do with each other.
One creates an xml sitemap to be used only by search engines, the other creates a sitemap to be placed on a WordPress page for use by humans. Both are configurable to determine what is left out.
