Support » Plugin: Yoast SEO » Google ranking drop after change of focus keyword

  • Resolved Ester Dammers

Recently I added some focus keywords to posts which didn’t yet have any, and added a word to the already added focus keyword of my most popular post. The day after, I saw the ranking of that particular post dropped quite a lot in the Google ranking. I changed the focus keyword to what it was before and waited, but even 2 weeks later, the old ranking hasn’t come back. I searched around Google to find a solution for this, but couldn’t find any. Because I changed the focus keyword through YOAST plug-in, I thought you might be able to help me out with this. How can I get my rankings back to how they were?

  • If you only updated Yoast SEO settings, that has nothing to do with what is actually ranking on the page. Changing words in your post itself can impact it, but Yoast SEO is just a guide. It doesn’t help you rank on Google.

No, I didn’t update any settings. I updated the keyword(s) for the post that, after that, suddenly dropped in ranking.

    Hi Estrella,
Google uses over 200 different factors to determine a page rank, many of which such as site speed, server configuration, caching, authority, are beyond the control of the plugin. Also, page ranks change very frequently. Perhaps, some other websites, probably bigger and better-optimized sites than yours, are trying to rank for the same focus keyword as well. All you can do is improve your SEO. You may find these articles helpful:

Thanks for the reply, but this isn’t the information I was looking for. As you can read, I already know exactly what caused the ranking drop. I changed the keyword for my most populair post and the next day my rankings were dropped increasingly. The article itself was always on top of Google using a certain search word, now it dropped about 10 places.

My question is, how can I revert this. After discovering, I changed the focus keyword back to what it was, but the rankings didn’t revert back to the old state. I’m not looking for a way to find out what caused the ranking drop, I’m looking for a way to solve it.

Modifying which keywords are used in the analysis of a page would not affect the content of the page itself, and thus would not have any type of affect on the page’s ranking in Google. So if the page changed it’s ranking, it would not be due to changing what your focus keyword was in the plugin.

If you require specific SEO advice, unfortunately, this forum is not the right place to do so. However, there is a lot of SEO advice on in the SEO blog and the dev blog.

My ranking dropped after enabling yoast plugin – on two separate domains. Sitemaps, meta tags, robots are all fine… it seems that plugin does change something, as this wouldn’t happen on two domains and 2 months apart (I don’t think this is due to google index change).

Did anyone else experienced same problem?
