Hi @zignorp
Could you check and confirm if you are using the latest version of WordPress 5.8.1 and Yoast SEO 17.4?
We do know that the Google Preview image should use the featured image for that post.
Do you have to add an excerpt in order to reproduce this issue? Or do we just need to try and create a new post, add a featured image, and upon saving the draft or publishing, the image should not show up in the Google Preview anymore?
def. using latest wp, I haven’t updated yoast to 17.5 yet, but it was up to date when I sent this out. (I usually update plugins at night, so I’ll run that 17.5 update tonight) I removed the excerpt text, and saved draft, and the image still isn’t showing up. Then I try to remove the excerpt variable from the meta description field, it goes away, but when I save draft, the excerpt variable label/button comes back, whether there’s an actual excerpt in the excerpt field or not. I’m launching a whole section, so would rather keep most of these as drafts until tonight. I’m also using the classic editor.
I realize that the excerpt is defined as the variable for the meta-description globally, so that’s probably why I can’t lose the variable on the page. I also checked with 17.5 on the dev site, and it still has this behavior, whether there’s an excerpt or not. I just created a new page, added the featured image, saw it in the Google Preview, then saved, and it disappeared. (no actual excerpt)
This is still an issue with WordPress 5.8.1 and Yoast SEO 17.5.
Classic editor. Press Customizr theme.
I created a new post on the dev site, not much text, added featured image, saw the image in the google preview, saved draft, no image there. Easily reproduced. Once I save draft or publish, there’s no way for me to see the image there.
Thanks for your attention.
Hi @zignorp
We understand you’ve created a new post on the dev site, but you are also using the ‘Classic Editor’ plugin as well as the ‘Press Customizr’ theme.
Often, we see problems occur in combination with another plugin or theme. The fastest way to rule out any conflict, is to deactivate all non-Yoast plugins and switch to a standard theme like Twenty Twenty.
Please test this on your development or staging site, if you have one. If not, we recommend using the Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin. This plugin has a troubleshooting mode, which does not affect normal visitors to your site.
If you’re unfamiliar with checking for conflicts, we’d like to point you to a step-by-step guide that will walk you through the process: How to check for plugin conflicts
Could you please first test this out with a default WP theme such as TwentyTwenty, and only Yoast SEO v17.5 as the plugin enabled? And then try to enable your preferred theme, and try to reproduce the issue. If it still doesn’t occur, please then enable the ‘Classic Editor’ plugin and let us know if the issue occurs then, so we’ll be able to identify the plugin or theme conflict here.
