Google Page Linking Always Fails

  • I’m trying to link my website to a Google Plus Page, and no matter what I do Google Plus claims there is no code. I’ve tried adding

    <a href="https://plus.google.com/+xxxxxx" rel="publisher">Google+</a>

to the header.php, which shows “Google+” above my site title, and Google Plus claims it cannot find the code. I’ve tried placing the code in various places within header.php but Google Plus claims it can’t find it. I’ve tried adding it to a widget in my sidebar – nothing. I’ve added the Google Authorship plugin. Nothing. I’ve tried adding specified code to functions.php but I get the white page of death. I give up!

Has anyone else successfully linked their WordPress site to their Google Plus Page?
