Support » Plugin: Google Maps Widget - Best Google Maps Plugin » Google Maps Platform is going to charge a fee?

  • Resolved Hey You

I just received an email from “Google Maps Platform” they are going to start charging for use. Don’t know if this is true or a bogus email. My client uses this wonderful plugin to locate his office, but for for $200 a month for usage, this plugin is gone.

Please tell me this is not so. I have no way to check the legitimacy of this email.
    please advise.

The email is not bogus. But it is also nothing new. Maps are free to a certain amount of views per months. It’s been like that for years. They’re just moving stuff around so now they are free for use of up to $200 a month. The email clearly states what your usage is and what the charge will be. This outlines the issues and changes much more clearly than that email did.

we’re probably going to switch most of our clients to using a static map image set (srcset for various screen sizes), that links to the live map at google themselves. Far easier this, than convincing said client they need to pony up their CC# to google just to use maps API.

The $200 they mention is basically a free credit towards that much in usage.

the details of how far that $200 goes can be found here:

For most smaller sites nothing changes, they’ll be within the limit. But the CC# is an issue. Not sure what was Google thinking with this move 🙁
