529 means that the target system is not available or under maintenance or does not respond to the request which could be due to various reasons.
Please try again after a few moments, if the issue is the same then we can forward that to our developers to consider in the upcoming revamped version of the plugin.

Since a while it always returns a 529 error. I can’t imagine Google Maps is unavailable or under maintenance all the time. Also, when I access the link directly, it’s working fine. When I hit “check again”, it just returns another 529 error.

Thank you for the update
The broken link plugin will do a cURL request using a specific user agent and then return what the link returned, it is possible the Google map is blocking the cURL request causing the false positive.
The above link returns 404 https://goo.gl/maps/… can you share an example of the link that is getting 529?
