It looks like one of the most recent Firefox updates has broken Google Gears’ compatibility with WordPress. As of a few days ago opening the media uploader seems to cause a total browser crash.

I can’t find any way to work around this issue short of completely disabling Gears. Even deleting your WordPress installation’s profile in Gears doesn’t seem to do the trick.

Just to make sure Gears is the culprit, I tried disabling every single other Firefox plugin and every single WordPress plugin. No dice.

I don’t know what needs to be done to resolve this, but I’m fairly sure this is an actual issue and not a localised configuration issue because it’s causing the same crash on two different computers, operating systems, and on all WordPress 2.7.1 installations (I operate many).

same thing has been happening to me and others.

hope its fixed soon, been using gears for a while with no issues til this week.

Hi it happened to me too – running Firefox 3 and WordPress (Turbo switched on) on a local install (using Xampp) on an XP netbook.

Disabling Gears in Firefox as per the instructions above was all was needed to get back on track again.

I’d like to add my 2 cents as well. I’ve verified it’s a problem with Google Gears, I don’t even have Turbo installed on my WordPress and GG makes Firefox crash when I try to add media to my Posts.

Another workaround is to use IETab – http://ietab.mozdev.org.

I use this extension a lot, and it’s nice for being able to stay in Firefox but use IE for problematic sites. I’m going to use it as a workaround to the lightbox/Gears/Firefox 3.0.10.0 issue while I wait for the fix. Better than disabling Gears altogether.

    Hope this helps.

    Same for me!

This is no longer a problem with Firefox 3.5. Hurrah.
