google base plugin?

  • Hmmm.. It seems like it would be easy enough to do, but I’ve never fully understood Google Base. It seems too freeform to be particularly useful.

Anyway, it seems more geared toward sellers posting large lists of all the items they sell, mainly so that those items will show up in Google searches. I don’t think it fits well with blog posts.

I mean, every Google Base item basically consists of:
-Name of the item (perhaps the title of the blog post?)
-URL to the item (permalink, obviously)
-Key/value pairs to describe the item.

You could come up with lots of key/values. Author, datetime, tags, categories, etc… But again, what’s the benefit? I’m just not really feeling it.

They also want to have reviews loaded in, and since I have a movie review blog it would be one more way to find readers.

However, since its based on the GData API I think this is worthwhile as it will, in the not very long run, be the main way to interact with most of their services. Already Calendar and Blogger use it.

On a slightly related note, Google just added a pinger for their blogsearch today. It’s a normal XML-RPC service, so you can use it by adding this URL to the Update Services list in Options->Writing: http://blogsearch.google.com/ping/RPC2
