 * I just started using WordPress, and I’m going to make my own theme. For my first
theme I will be using an existing one, and modify it in order to learn as much
   as possible.
 * Is there any simple themes out there that are better than others for a beginner
   to start modifying?

 * Well, there are what’s called theme frameworks, which are meant to be used as
foundations upon which you can base your theme. A few good frameworks are:
    1. [Thematic](http://themeshaper.com)
    2. [Hybrid](http://themehybrid.com)
    3. [Thesis](http://diythemes.com)
 * Some other themes that are just good all-round themes for customization:
    1. [Vigilance](http://thethemefoundry.com/vigilance/)
    2. [Cutline](http://pearsonified.com)
    3. [Modularity Lite](http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/modularity-lite)
