UPDATE: I’ve had to switch to another theme that let me build magazine-style frontpage without coding, but it wasn’t an easy decision for two reasons.

Reason 1: GeneratePress is a very good theme without unnecessary multitude of files and with all the right ones (like a dedicated .php to image attachments).

Reason 2. You will never find such thorough, speedy and up-until-solved support like with GeneratePress’ author Tom. He never leaves any support questions and requests either here or on his home page without a reply and solution. It is simply amazing. Even if you have any issues with GeneratePress you can be sure that you won’t be left alone.

INITIAL REVIEW: I’ve been running Generate Press theme for a day and have already run into several issues like conflict with minifying plugin (solved), images distortion (not yet solved), lack of breadcrumbs (their implementation is available in the paid upgrade).

On the other hand, it is nice looking and doesn’t come with many modules (business themes usually overdo with those) that look good in the demo but don’t work and are not used, still making the code and theme heavier. The code looks a bit cleaner.

I would have given this theme 4 stars, but its great support deserved it 5 stars. Just look into the support forums and you’ll see that there are not so many pages of topics and EVERY ONE of them is RESOLVED. Plus you can quickly try and catch Tom, the theme author, on the theme home page support forum. I have never seen a theme without a single unresolved topic.

So if you want a nice, clean and (guess) light-coded theme with EXCELLENT SUPPORT and are not afraid of little issues here and there definitely go for Generate Press.

    Thanks for the review!

Minifying plugins can definitely be a little picky no matter what theme you choose – glad we were able to resolve that!

The image distortion is thanks to WordPress adding 10px of width to the caption container of images – you can find a solution to that here: http://generatepress.com/forums/topic/images-are-distorted/#post-71683

I do plan on adding a breadcrumbs feature in a future version – I’ve just always relied on plugins that include them like WordPress SEO. You can definitely add their breadcrumbs without any paid add-ons 🙂

Thanks again for the review, and for helping me improve GP by tackling these little issues!

I’ve already added breadcrumbs via code-snippet plugin you recommended and inserted them in posts and pages only (without using them globally). So I will only have to repaste the little code line into the single-content and page phps after GP updates.

As for Yoast SEO it doesn’t work. I enabled the feature and tried to place the code into the functions.php as it says I should do, but nothing shows. Yoast SEO doesn’t say if I have to somehow update single php files as well.

Another issue is sliders (I wanted recent posts slider) – I tried them all but not a single one worked. They either don’t show anything at all, or show some text in a distorted non-slider way. So I just quit and live without. Less code and better speeds.

Thanks again for your great theme and even greater support!

Instead of adding the code to the theme files, try using hooks. We have an add-on named “GP Hooks” that allows you to “hook” code into certain areas of the theme.

Then, you can choose to only make them show up on certain pages using conditionals.

    More info here: http://generatepress.com/forums/topic/can-i-make-hooks-open-only-on-certain-pages/#post-64848

Odd about the sliders – if you use one that’s up to date and maintained you shouldn’t have any issues.

    Let me know 🙂
