Support » Plugin: Gutenberg » Good first impression

  • Worrying about this new plugin, I set up a test server and played a bit with Gutenberg.

I am glad to discover that I can still write HTML code, and I can actually save frequently used HTML snippets as blocks for future use.

That is to say… that if you prefer to write plain old HTML code (or shortcodes), Gutenberg might actually be one step forward for you.

That said, I am not yet convinced that this is mainline ready. And to be honest, I have not found any of its included blocks particularly useful. Sure, “headings” and “blockquotes” and “paragraphs” are good, but they have been good since the first day of HTML.

But it is definitely more positive than most comments say. Gutenberg seems to be at worst a feature that can be ignored, and can be treated as a slightly more configurable version of the vanilla editor. I think I will give it three stars as a first impression, though the real test probably happens at WP 5.0.

(I’ll give some of the more popular Gutenberg block plugins a try and add my comments here in a few days)
