Support » Installing WordPress » Going from Dreamhost to 1and1 – multiple problems

  • Before someone asks: Yeah, I tried the Codex. 🙂 Didn’t work, unfortunately. I also realize that these two have had issues before with WP – I’m hoping I can get it to work for me.

    In question: – Dreamhost Original – 1and1 in-progress

Now, initially I tried recreating by transfering all of the WP directories in the old server to the new one. It looks somewhat fine until I noticed that permalinks (single posts, archives, categories, etc) do not work.

(More related to PHP in general, but: Also, as you can see my headers aren’t either. I was using ALA’s Dynamic Font Replacement to replace the headers in the template. I’m meeting all the requirements, but I can’t figure out what’s going wrong. I tried out Image Headlines on the new server briefly, which is based on DFR – it works, but I need the ability to specify multiple styles.)

So, I thought I’d try to copy the database as well to make it as close to the original as possible. I backed up the database in phpMyAdmin then tried to load it into the other server. I got an error on “DEFAULT CHARACTER SET latin1 COLLATE latin1_swedish_ci;” and I imagine it doesn’t get better from there.

A lot of the content use direct links (template links, Flash, etc) that can be edited, but these are the problems I’ve had so far. There may be, and probably are, more. Can anyone be of assistance? I’d really appreciate it. Thanks. 🙂

  • This post might be of help with the error message:

Moshu: Thanks for the quick reply. Unfortunately, copying and pasting the code had the same problem.

Exact error message: MySQL said: Documentation
#1064 – You have an error in your SQL syntax. Check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near ‘DEFAULT CHARACTER SET latin1 COLLATE latin1_swedish_ci’ at line

i found you here too lol

i am so not a wp geek so i can’t help you XD haha. in fact, i don’t even get what you needed help with. anddd for a reply to your reply to mine.. my website has iframes so it probably won’t work XD

    completely random.

Hey, this problem occurs when moving between older and newer versions of mysql. When you export your database in phpmyadmin, pull down from the dropdown labelled “SQL export compatibility” and get MYSQL40

An educated guess tells me that 1&1 uses an older version of MySQL than Dreamhost does. May I ask why you are switching?

To put it simply, I can’t afford to maintain Dreamhost since I was paying the promotional price the first year. (I asked if they minded extending it – the promotional price was valid up to last month and all I host are high school/community pages, but they refused.)

My 1and1 account isn’t really as ideal, but it’s what I have to work with for the time being. I’m looking into alternatives if they’re available, but the truth is I don’t really have a lot of money at the moment… not enough to even get myself a Flickr Pro account.

Anyway, I’ll look into the MySQL problem and report back soon. If all goes well and the database works, I’ll wipe the first install, copy everything back again, and see how it goes from there. Thanks jalenack!

Another problem that I just noticed: Author Icons aren’t present as well.

I’m talking to someone that’s willing to host in the meantime, but I want to get it to its permanent home ASAP. (Preferably bypassing him; one server move seems troublesome enough.)

Anyone have ideas as to why the Author Images plug-in isn’t working?

Seems to be working for me.

(and very nice site by the way)
