Support » Plugin: Site Kit by Google - Analytics, Search Console, AdSense, Speed » Global site tag instructions appearing in footer

    Is there a reason why I am seeing the following text below the footer of my site?

    “Global site tag (gtag.js) Use this if you’re using a website builder or CMS-hosted site
    Add the Analytics tag to your website to begin seeing data in your property.
    Copy the global site tag into the section of your HTML. Or, if you use a website builder (e.g. WordPress, Shopify, etc), copy the global site tag into your website builder’s custom HTML field.”

    When I deactivate the plugin, the text goes away. I suspect this has something to do with how the account was set up, but not sure where.

    Hey @dsutoyo,

    Thanks for reaching out to us.

    1) Could you provide your site URL?

    2) Are you using Site Kit’s Analytics code snippet or another plugin or theme to add the Analytics code to your site?

    Best Regards,

    @abdullahramzan
    1. It is humanitystartshere.org. Please note that we have hidden the message via CSS, but it’s still there towards the end of the document.
    2. I don’t believe we are using anything else. I tried deactivating all plugins (except for Site Kit) and switched to twentytwentyone and the message is still there. I found the function that displays the message in gtm.js, but can’t figure out what triggers it.

    @dsutoyo ,

    Thanks for sharing details.

    We have inspected your site & can see duplicate tags via Google Tag Assistant Chrome extension. But we can’t find those duplicated tags in source code of the website.

    To troubleshoot this at our end can you please send us SH info via form privately so maybe we can find out the reason based on the details.

    Also please share the screenshot of Analytics settings from the Site Kit Settings page.

    Update: Cache might be the reason as well on server level that is showing cached pages. So please purge/disable cache from the server in case if its enabled.

    @abdullahramzan Just submitted SH info and analytics settings.

    I was able to find out that there were two properties created in the Analytics account, one is a Legacy tag and one is using GA4. The Legacy one is connected via Site Kit, but it looks like the GA4 tag is getting pulled in as well? Is it possible the message will go away if we remove one of the properties?

    @dsutoyo thanks for getting back to us & sharing Site Health information.

    Let’s try one more troubleshooting activity & its very good chance we’d be able to see the reason as this error is not from Site Kit.

    Please follow the given steps:

    1. Install and activate the Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin.
    2. Navigate to “Plugins > Health Check & Troubleshooting > Troubleshoot”.
    3. From the same screen click on the “Available Plugins” tab at the top right and then click on the “Enable” option next to “Site Kit by Google”
    4. Check your site to see you are seeing same error or not.

    You can exit troubleshooting mode afterwards.

    @abdullahramzan Thanks. I still see the error message after using Health Check & Troubleshooting.

    My hunch is that this may be caused by the dual IDs created in the Analytics account. What do you think?

    Plugin Support Abdullah Ramzan

    (@abdullahramzan)

    @dsutoyo as for the dual ID we are not sure about this conflict as we didn’t check this testcase at our end. We’ll surely try out this setup at our end & then let you know.

    Happy Friday 🙂

    @dsutoyo ,

    I hope you are doing well.

    We did the same activity at our end by creating new property with GA4 & Universal Analytics under same account. We couldn’t recreate this issue at our end. So its a very good chance the error is coming from any other plugin/theme.

    We are marking this ticket as resolved. Feel free to reach us in case of any issues.

    @dsutoyo Just an update on this one, the snippet that was output on your site looks to be part of a Tag Manager container instruction. You’ll find this in the image below:

    While it no longer appears on your site have you since deactivated any non Site Kit placed Tag Manager snippet?

    Thread Starter dsutoyo

    (@dsutoyo)

    @jamesosborne Yes, it’s part of the container instruction, and I was able to find the code that generated it in gtm.js, though not sure of the conditions that trigger it.

    The message is still there, it’s just hidden by CSS.

    I have deactivated everything on a test site. I’ve even exported the db to a new site with no other existing plugins and I still see the message. I’m almost positive it comes from a specific GA/GTM configuration (I’m guessing it’s the dual IDs), and Site Kit, or rather gtm.js, is spitting out the message as a result.

    Thanks for providing additional insights. I’ll try and replicate this from my side with the same setup. Please allow me some time before reporting back to you here.

    @dsutoyo I’ve been unable to recreate this so far from testing. While I don’t think this is Site Kit specific can you please share a screenshot or details of the tags you have associated with your associated Tag Manager account? You can use a service such as Imgur or Google drive to share an image. I’m curious to know your current Tag Setup.

    Thread Starter dsutoyo

    (@dsutoyo)

    @jamesosborne @abdullahramzan Turns out it was a human error. Someone had copied the text into a custom HTML tag. I didn’t have access to the tags, hence the confusion.

    Thanks so much for taking the time to help us out!

    (@jamesosborne)

    No problem at all, it had be baffled also! I did eventually recreate it in a similar fashion, copying and pasting into a custom HTML tag within Tag Manager (including instructions!)

    Great to hear that it’s no longer occurring anyway after modifying the tag. If you have any further queries be sure to get in touch, and if you have a moment free we’d love to hear how you’re finding the plugin so far, especially as a user of multiple modules.
