Gift Card Redeeming Issues

I have several issues. We had a customer with a $50.00 gift card code. They had a cart total of $54.33 and instead of the system deducting the $50.00 and requiring the customer to pay the difference ($4.33), it gave a discount of $4.33 so the transaction would equal the total of the gift card they had. I cancelled that transaction and we redid it to equal less or equal to the gift card but this transaction says the total is $0.00 at the end of it. Not only that but when I go to the list of gift cards to see if it deducted the amount from the gift card on this second transaction ($46.35), it says the balance is still $50.00. What should happen is when a customer finishes entering their gift card code and applying it, it should deduct the gift card from the total and then leave a remaining balance to be paid by credit card or whatever. After applying the gift card, the option to use a credit card section disappears completely. Also, when I sync this purchase with Quickbooks, it shows it was paid by a Visa Card vs a Gift Card which I have no idea why.
