I have been looking at and for, automated backup solutions that works. Have tried several and none worked. They all stopped and started continuously, took hours, and did not produce a usable archive. Then I found your article about cron problems. I have a site that has little traffic and will have little traffic. It is designed mostly for subscribers who will be accessing it mostly in the daytime. They are few but important. Our breadline!

I have been doing manual backups and now need an automated backup that works fast, almost at the speed the data can be manually backed up, is able to run completely at night, and is reliable, not dependent on whether or not the site is busy. This is important. We want to run backups at night when there is little traffic like “normal” companies. We like the way your plug in is set up but have never gotten it to work, make a usable archive, either manually or on automatically.

To test for any plugin conflicts, I turned off ALL plugins except Updraft and ran it with manual settings. It produced about 18 useless archives over a period of about 4 hours by the time I stopped it. Kept restarting, each time producing a new archive. On automatic it’s worse yet. I scheduled a backup to start in the evening, to try it out. I let it run for hours before going to bed, thinking it might just be slow. When I returned in the morning it had produced over 4 gigs of useless files for a 400 meg site, but no finished product. That’s over 12 hours!

The company doesn’t mind paying for a plugin but that plugin must work first. Due to damages caused by a malicious tech who planted malware, we also have a strict security policy that does not allow for third parties to have access to the site. Any support must be done through on site admin(s).

    Thanks.

    Hi,

What is in the zip archives? You say they were “useless files” – but what were they? UD doesn’t invent backup files out of thin air, of course, so the best way forward is to determine what is being backed up.

P.S. Concerning the timings of when things run, UpdraftPlus uses WordPress’s scheduler. i.e. It relies on WP to tell it “run now!”. WP’s scheduler naturally relies on WP itself running. So, if you have hours in the night when nobody visits the site, or very few people (relative to the number of scheduled tasks – which includes WP internal ones, not just obvious ones you configure like backups) do, then things won’t run at the expected times. To work around that, set up an explicit call to wp-cron.php in your web hosting control panel on a regular schedule.

Went to backup that does not depend on WordPress Scheduler running or not.
    Problem solved.
