I subscribed to in November. Since then I have been SWAMPED with hundreds of emails, which I did not choose to happen.

I have done the following to stop email notifications of stuff that comes up in the particular forum I am subscribed to:

    1. Logged in to

    2. On the menubar at the top, far right, clicked my profile username A menu pops up below, Click Edit My Profile

    3. Next to my username I clicked the Notifications link.

    4. In the Notifications screen, under Settings I UNCHECKED theReceive notifications by email? Checkbox.

    5. I clicked the Save button.

This should stop all email notifications, right? It isn’t. I am still being swamped with every single email that comes up in the particular forum i am subscribed to, which is ridiculous.

Meantime, HOW in the world do I stop getting swamped with so many UNWANTED forum emails?

    Thank you.

    Volunteer support

Go to this page and look for text that says “unsubscribe”: . There should just be one button there.

I’m happy to help, but not if you’re threatening legal action.

Hi there, I’d like to point out that is an open source project, everyone here are volunteers, and as soon as legal talk is brought into the mix we have to be a bit more direct in our approach. As a precaution, due to you initiating talks of legality in it all, your account has been flagged for manual approval for a period (this means one of our volunteer moderators needs to approve a post before it becomes visible). This is done to ensure the safety and well being of our users when we are uncertain of what direction a conversation might take.

As for your law mentions, I am not a lawyer, but from my understanding of CANSPAM (which I believe is what you are referring to here) doesn’t apply because you are makign a direct action to subscribe to a plugin forum (in your case at least), and as such the emails are not unsolicited.

Now that all that’s taken care of, follow Andrew’s suggestion above and you should be fine, also going to your subscriptions (from the menu you mentioned previously), you should be able to unsubscribe from anything there.

Next to my username I clicked the Notifications link.

Notifications is just one kind of email. You can use the Notifications system to listen for keywords and mentions of your username in the forums and elsewhere.

The emails you are getting are from a plugin support forum. You clicked the “Subscribe” button on that forum at some point. To stop getting those, go back to that forum, and click the Unsubscribe button at the top of the forum.

    This forum:

I am still being swamped with every single email that comes up in the particular forum i am subscribed to, which is ridiculous.

That’s what “subscribe” is. If you don’t want it to email you, then don’t be subscribed to that forum.

Why would I want to unsubscribe to the forum that I am interested in? That is not what I want to do at all. I just want to stop being NOTIFIED BY EMAIL about every single thing that the forum I am subscribed to belches out.

The procedure I described in my original post should most certainly stop NOTIFICATIONS about the forum? Right. That’s common sense.

Legality or not, it’s just plain NOT NICE to make it so difficult to stop getting emails.

And that’s common sense, too. Now quoting the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, the U.S. agency charged with commercial email enforcement (I’ve highlighted the relevant parts):

“Tell recipients how to opt out of receiving future email from you. Your message must include a clear and conspicuous explanation of how the recipient can opt out of getting email from you in the future. Craft the notice in a way that’s easy for an ordinary person to recognize, read, and understand. Creative use of type size, color, and location can improve clarity. Give a return email address or another easy Internet-based way to allow people to communicate their choice to you. You may create a menu to allow a recipient to opt out of certain types of messages, but you must include the option to stop all commercial messages from you. Make sure your spam filter doesn’t block these opt-out requests.”

Again, that’s nice and it’s the law. Of COURSE I am not “threatening legal action”.

That’s the law and it applies to for profit and not for profit entities. I know, because I worked a not for profit entity for 30 years and WE had to comply, just like everyone else.

The emails I get from say at the bottom [emphasis mine], “Login and visit the topic to unsubscribe from these emails.”

Right, visit the TOPIC, not the FORUM. I want to get email notifications on the TOPIC that I have raised, not get swamped with every single solitary email the forum belches out. For instance, at the bottom of this topic thread that I am typing this reply it says “Notify me of follow-up replies via email”. Yes, I want THAT not every single thing that spews out of an entire forum.

Folks, this is common sense stuff. I trust the people take this heart and make the necessary changes.

    Thank you.

Okay, let me try to explain this much simpler:

“Subscribe” = “email me these things”

That’s literally the only thing that subscribing to a forum does. Subscribing doesn’t do anything else. There’s no benefit to subscribing to a forum in any way. There’s no list of things that you are subscribed to that you can look at, or anything else.

If you don’t want email, then don’t subscribe to it. You can still browse the forum directly, or get RSS feeds, or whatever you like, without subscribing. Subscribing is only for emailing you those posts. That’s all it does.

Subscribing to a topic emails you posts in that topic. Subscribing to an entire forum emails you all the posts made in that forum.

I admit that maybe we should reword that button to make it more clear, and I’m not entirely sure what you thought subscribing would do, but all it does is turn on emails. Unsubscribing from it will turn off those emails, and nothing else will change.

Right now, you are subscribed to 2 things: This topic, and that forum. Unsubbing from that forum will make it not send you emails from that forum anymore. You will still get emails from this topic because you are still subscribed to it.

If you make a new topic, and select “Notify me of follow-up replies via email” then that will subscribe you to that topic and you’ll get emails from it. Regardless of what forum it is in.

The only reason for the existence of the “Subscribe to this plugin” button is because yes, some people want emails from every post made about a plugin. If you don’t want that, click the unsubscribe button on that link I gave you earlier.

Sigh. Since you still have not unsubscribed, I’m going to change your email address on these forums to force our systems to stop emailing you.

If you have problems logging back in, then you can email me directly. I’m otto at this domain.
