Getting Redirection to Automatically create 301s?

  • Hi there

I’ve used Redirection for a while, and absolutely love it.

However, there is one feature that I’m looking for, and I’m not sure if Redirection CAN do this or not…?

What I’m looking for is a way for a 301 to be created AUTOMATICALLY if someone is about to hit a 404 page. The domain I’m working on is massive, but there are TONS of dead pages/links, so we need something that will proactively redirect people when they type in a URL or click on a link that no longer exists.

Some helpful comments would be MUCH appreciated!

    Cheers

    Jeff

I wouldn’t advise doing this. 404 errors indicate that the page does not exist. Changing them into 301s is like saying that they used to exist and now exist somewhere else. Can you change the 404 page to be more pro-active instead?

No the point is that I want to avoid a 404 like the plague. It’s a little hard to explain, but this domain is simply better off directing people to the home page than leaving them stranded on a 404, regardless of how helpful or useful it may be.

So basically I’m just looking for a way to create 301 redirects on the fly, and the URL can be the same for all of them.

    Is this even possible?

I think the No 404 Errors plugin may help. Looks like you redirect all errors to a page of your choice.

You can do this with Redirection by creating a global regex redirect in the 404 module that redirects all the pages.

Awesome, thanks for the input folks. Someone else suggested:

which was pretty much what I was looking for. I’d also be interested in finding out more about the regex redirect in Redirection, because that sounds more powerful, and potentially a better idea all around. Any “help guides” on that John?

Have a look at Smart-404 too. It can help get to the correct target page via black magic.
